vermiculite vs. perlite
    #1162039 - 12/22/02 09:46 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

having a hard time finding vermiculite ( out of season ? ) but there is plenty of perlite around, ive heard perlite used as a base in casing but not as part of a substrate. can perlite be used instead of vermiculite ?

Verm should be easy to get, just go to the garden section of someplace like Lowe's or Home Depot. It's cheap, too, you can get a giant bag of the stuff for like $3.

If you can't find it nearby, there are plenty of online vendors. Try this one: http://www.mycosupply.com

sorry DSD!  i couldn't think of a kind way to put it. there are apparently verm substitutes about if you look hard enough, but perlite ain't one of them.

with perlite you can line casing trays, make a casing layer, and humidity a terrarium. not much else, i think.

I found mine at Fred Meyer. I dont know if you have these stores in your area. It was not where I expected it to be (garden center). I found it with the indoor plant stuff. Grab the Phone book and call around. Saves on gas.

Got a car? I had exactly the same problem. Every vendor around town had perlite but no vermiculite. What I resorted to was going to www.yellowpages.com and looking up every nursery in my state (Washington) and calling them. Amazingly only one nursery had any in stock and they told me they were closing in an hour and not opening again until February 1st next year. At this point I pretty much gave up hope and decided to buy online, but on a whim I called the same nursery later in the day and they were still open. So... I convinced them to set up a meeting the next day even though they would be closed, and then drove 90 miles to pick up one bag for $4.36.

Don't drive 90 miles for verm, that's just nuts. I've read somewhere that if you break up at terra cotta (sp) pot into small pieces with a hammer, you can sub it for verm, I'm not sure how successful this is, but it sure beats driving 90 miles.

You can definately use perlite for casing. I've done it before, just sterilize to avoid contams. Same as perlite, just colonizes faster. I've compared growing with a 50/50 vermiculite and soil casing and 50/50 perlite and soil casing, I found better results with the perlite and soil casing.

And I've been told perlite works fine for cakes as well, it colonizes faster than brown rice flour, and the flushes are bigger, mushrooms are the same.

So go out and get some perlite, try it.

You can't substitute perlite for brown rice flour. Perlite is non nutritious.

My bad. Of course you can't replace BRF for perlite...
I meant you can substitue perlite for vermiculite.
