Very strange error (I'm blocked from accessing the forums)

An hour or so ago I tried to browse to the oldest page of posts in the Chem/Pharm forum, only to have the page hang forever, saying "waiting for shroomery.org".  So I hit the My Threads link (in the upper left), and got the same thing.  I figured the site was just undergoing random updates or whatever, but when I came back a half hour later, still nothing from the forums would load.  I went to the main site, and that was working fine... but I noticed that new threads were popping up in the "Recent Posts" section, so the problem looked to be only on my end.

I decided to try loading the forums via a proxy, and it connected me just fine.  But as soon as I tried to navigate to the last page of the Chem/Pharm forum again, it just hung there. So I tried to go to My Threads, and again, the issue persisted. That particular proxy will no longer access the shroomery forums for me.

So now here I am, via a different proxy. I tried re-setting my internet connection, but that didn't help, the forums still won't load unless I use a proxy.

Now I know better than to try to navigate to the oldest page of posts in the Chem/Pharm forum again (I was just curious how old that particular forum is), but posting via proxy is a hassle.

Any thoughts on this bug?

And now roughly an hour later it's stopped blocking me :smile:

But I'm still afraid to click that link :undecided:

Guess: bad routing or DNS table somewhere between your location and the shroomery. Possible DNS hijack, black hole router, network redirect problem causing too many hops or TTL expiring, et cetera nauseum. Using a proxy most likely bypassed the hardware/routing tables, circumventing the problem.

Honestly, it's not really that strange, just not particularly commonplace.

It had nothing to do with what you were browsing on the shroomery.

No one posted from 5am until ten am today, so either everyone decided to go do something else at the same time, or there was some type of problem.  I was getting connection refused messages when I telnet to shroomery.org on port 80.

Very good guess, but it actually was on our end - apparently the new version of Sphinx is still a little buggy. :tongue: I downgraded and believe it should be working again.
