It was a night out that college students Leslie Pope and John Wagner will long remember. Not only did they get awful service, they got handcuffed and arrested.

Bullshit. They can't make you pay a tip.. this shit is gonna get thrown out in a court if they even try and press charges..

The menu clearly states, "18 percent gratuity added to check of parties of 6 of more,"

So it's their fault really, if they had bad service they should have complained instead of just walking out.

Yea.. what happened to tips being intended to reward service 'above and beyond' the normal.

Anytime some place adds a tip to the check I make sure not to tip them.

Restaurant owners have the inherent right to create their own rules as long as they are within the law.  By going to said restaurant the patron is assumed to acknowledge said rules.  If the patron does not then they are held liable.

Yeah, when restaurants are upfront about required gratuity for certain sized groups, I think you are legally obligated to pay it. If they'd made a fuss about it before they went to pay the bill, chances are they could've come to an amicable agreement with the owner.  As it stands, I think they're screwed :shrug:

You could argue that... were it not for the fact the menu makes clear that for groups of 6 or more, it's not a tip as much as it is a surcharge.

It's not a matter of wanting to tip them if the establishment explicitly states parties of 6 or more are obligated to pay 18% gratuity.  They should have gone to another place if they did not want to be forced to tip.  Business owners have the right to force gratuity on certain party sizes.  Patrons do NOT have the right to skip out on that forced gratuity.

Sucks for them anyways...

I have worked a job at a steak house restaurant and received tips and liked that cash money- but I never expected to get a tip, it was always a surprise and something I earned.

I don't like how these days tips are becoming more and more mandatory.. I believe tips are meant to be that reward, not something to expect- and I make sure not to tip those who try and force me to tip them.


But I guess these guys may be sol if the 18% tip was a known rule at this place.

I tip appropriately for the service I get. If the service is bad, I leave a penny or a nickel (that way they know the service was truly shitty and I didn't just forget to tip)

HAHA that actually is a good idea. Would definitely send a stronger message than no tip.

Servers hate small tips ha! If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone at that restaurant I worked at complain about a small tip.. than I wouldn't have needed to work there.
