ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A 5-year-old girl was arrested, cuffed and put in back of a police cruiser after an outburst at school where she threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls.
The students were counting jelly beans as part of a math exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary School when the little girl began acting silly. That's when her teacher took away her jelly beans, outraging the child.
Minutes later, the 40-pound girl was in the back of a police cruiser, under arrest for battery. Her hands were bound with plastic ties, her ankles in handcuffs.
"I don't want to go to jail," she said moments after her arrest Monday.
No charges were filed and the girl went home with her mother.
While police say their actions were proper, school officials were not pleased with the outcome.
"We never want to have 5-year-old children arrested," said Michael Bessette, the district's Area III superintendent.
The district's campus police should have been called to help and not local police, he said.
Bessette said campus police routinely deal with children and are trained to calm them in such situations.
Under the district's code of student conduct, students are to be suspended for 10 days and recommended for expulsion for unprovoked attacks, even if they don't result in serious injury. But district spokesman Ron Stone said that rule wouldn't apply to kindergartners.
"She's been appropriately disciplined under the circumstances," he said.
The girl's mother, Inda Akins, said she is consulting an attorney.
"She's never going back to that school," Akins said. "They set my baby up."

I was expelled from kindergarten too. I Stomped on the principal's foot because they were manhandling and mistreating me. The teacher left nail marks on me and cartwheeled me down the hall against my will. they both got fired and had their teaching liscenses revoked for child abuse.

The thing that pisses me off is how the school claims that what happened wasn't their intention. WTF else would the police do besides follow standard procedure?

Somebody made a mistake. They probably know it was a mistake, and I doubt whoever called the cops is happy they did.
I think the mother is probably over-indulgent, and the child spoiled and poorly behaved. I think putting a five year old in handcuffs is rediculous, but a kid throwing a violent tantrum in school was probably hard for people to deal with.

Perhaps when infants start kicking in the womb, we can find a way to cuff/restrain them so they dont do it anymore.

She could have posed a physical threat to herself. If this was the case wouldn't cuffs be the best choice? Some kids just go ballistic and handcuffs may seem harsh but they could have been appropriate in this case.

Jesus, that is like those kids that were 8 years old that tied some little 5 year old up on the train tracks. They were sent to jail for 20 years or something and they were finally able for parole. Some lady was trying to petition for them to never come out of jail.
Honestly, I think we all did some stupid things as youngsters. I did some stuff that was pretty wrong, and I would never do such things again. I didn't kill anyone, but I sure did break a lot of stuff and steal tons of stuff.
Today I wouldn't break or steal anything like that, that is wrong. I don't think those kids really knew everything that was going on back in what, 3rd or 4th grade right?
Besides the point, a 5 year old going to jail is purely ridiculous. I have seen children through a tissy fit before and it is purely an attention seeking game. You have to love the school system, just because some kids are different or see the world differently they are forced to mold into the math, science, english and history world of understanding. I consider myself lucky as I enjoy most of the materials naturally, but you have to love as well learning the same stupid american history 10 separate times with primarily the same information each time. What a pure waste of a teachers efforts, my learning, government money, assuming every person in america is a complete and utter baboon. It is very sad that children are forced to mold into a field that perhaps has little to no interest to themselves. Not as I suggest a personality test to put children into scheduled job placement or even worse from a dna test that establishes strengths and weaknesses, but possibly a more diverse school system... which will never happen because it would cost to much money. In retrospect, perhaps personality testing or dna testing would be good for society to place people in the correct positions.

but yea sounds like a bratty ass little kid, they should have made her stay a night in solitary maybe that would teach her a lesson, I was in Chicago a couple years ago playing this soccer game at an arcade and this little black kid no older than 5 or 6 came up to me and tried to push me out of the way ( I think he barely had the strength to lift a gallon of milk) and when he couldn't word for word he told me to "get the fuck off my game bitch" i just laughed and he got annoyed and left but I couldn't believe I heard such a little thing say something like that....
