Britain's new Internet Law [Digital Economy Bill]

I'm sure this could be put in multiple forums but I felt it belonged here the most.

"The British government has brought down its long-awaited Digital Economy Bill, and it's perfectly useless and terrible. It consists almost entirely of penalties for people who do things that upset the entertainment industry (including the "three-strikes" rule that allows your entire family to be cut off from the net if anyone who lives in your house is accused of copyright infringement, without proof or evidence or trial), as well as a plan to beat the hell out of the video-game industry with a new, even dumber rating system (why is it acceptable for the government to declare that some forms of artwork have to be mandatory labelled as to their suitability for kids? And why is it only some media? Why not paintings? Why not novels? Why not modern dance or ballet or opera?).

So it's bad. £50,000 fines if someone in your house is accused of file sharing. A duty on ISPs to spy on all their customers in case they find something that would help the record or film industry sue them (ISPs who refuse to cooperate can be fined £250,000). "

Personally, I feel most countries are going to have to face similar legislature at some point in the future. I'm curious to everyone ideas on the situation. I haven't given it much thought but I personally feel these laws are outdated and just giving into the music industry's demand for more money instead of finding solutions to work with file sharing.

I haven't given it much thought but I feel they can support music and still get paid from numerous ways using taxes for people who want to download music, or buying artists you support and through donations to artists. Those ideas may not work I would rather just see ways to utilize the internet for the public instead of censoring, banning, fining and jail time. Get people to talk about how to use the technology to get people their just money and people to get new music.

One load of thugs trying to use illegitimate government force to gain more power and punish another load of thugs (using them as scapegoats) and who get hurt in the crossfire, who loses freedom?

i disagree with this piece of legislation, but i understand why its being implemented.

you cannot stop file transferring/sharing, only punish those who 'expolit' it

There is no outrage in England, they just take it, whine for a bit, and then tell us what's wrong about our laws.

I think you'll find that MANY musicians are all for file sharing. Indie music, anyhow.  But then again, they've got an entirely different motive.

It's getting REALLY bad... They are doing a 'wash up' and trying to get it passed without so much as even a debate despite 20,000 letters opposing the bill.
