I haven't attempted to reach this altered mental paradigm, but I can see it's advantages. You may think those who stray from the standard perception would crack under less pressure, but I've seen people who seemed to be able to tolerate more because of manic depression.

Extreme emotions fit extreme situations.

wasteland have you actually met anyone who is bipolar? In my experience, they break down easier as a result of extreme emotions. I've never seen anyone who's bipolar that is able to tolerate more as a result.

There are different kinds of bipolarity, so this is an over-generalization.
