Which would cost much more than killing him.

Other animals would probably chase him away from the herd, make sure he doesn't breed. He would likely die alone in the wilderness.

That would just be inhumane.

Government: the group currently in charge. It's a dirty job, but some body's gonna do it.

The reality of governments, and the desire for revenge and low tax dollars isn't going anywhere any time soon as far as I can tell. There was a time when a majority was against the death penalty, but it didn't last long enough. Without a sustained opinion by the majority, what is the vehicle of change?

The wild card is social manipulation, in which case the majority may be subverted, but this would make capital punishment a side issue.

Either way, a group would need the power to cause this suspension of action... and without majority rule in their favor, the new boss would be the same as the old boss, with a few adjustments to suit the sentiments of the leading class.

Anyhow, the death penalty probably won't make it through the 21st Century in the USA.

Yeah if you really want to punish somebody keep them alive and in prison.

Plus we are a prison economy so it's good on that level too. We are in a recession remember.

Why is it a humans right to live?  I have no problem putting someone to death if I think they are a problem that can't be resolved. This is how nature has always worked.

What's worse about executing someone in comparison to locking them up for 30 years or so? That seems just as subjective as any decision of what is "right" or "wrong". I would rather be executed than have a life in jail myself.
