Constant Pupil Dilation?

Hello all.

For the past few months I have noticed that my pupils are constantly dilated like I am tripping. The last drugs other than marijuana (daily smoker) that I have used are ecstasy, shrooms, and hydrocodone. The ecstasy use was one and a half months ago, the shrooms were 2 months, and hydrocodone 2 weeks. My pupils usually shrink while under the influence of any opiate, but on a 60mg hydrocodone dose, they stayed dilated. I can check my pupils in any light amount/intensity and they are still dilated.

Can anyone offer a biological explanation for this?

Yer fucked mate. The hydrocodone reacts with the MDMA to form rexatitsareup which'll dilate your pupils and eventually lead to scarring of the retina through over exposure.

Oh well, you shouldn't be messing around with nasty drugs anyway should you?

Well, I don't know about "rexatitsareup." LoLz!

But this is obviously a symptom of some sort of neurological condition. Are they uniformly/bilaterally dilated, or is one more dilated than the other? What is the pupil response time like to a change in light?

If one was more dilated than the other, than I might suspect a micro-stroke from a raise in blood pressure and vasoconstriction from the MDMA. It sounds like it started about the time you took the MDMA. Can you remember if there a precise correlation with a drug incident and the start of this phenomenon?

Pupil dilation and constriction is normally a reflex reaction to environmental parameters. However, it is also tied in with the "blush response" and arousal, as a nonverbal cue in courtship, as well as being involved in "fight or flight" adrenal response, so it can be somewhat controlled at higher levels of neuro-function through neuro-hormone action.

Is there any other associated symptomology?

I really don?t know, but I would see a doctor (read: eye specialist), and see what he says... :crazy:

Thanks for the excellent post, Papaver.

They are uniformly dilated like saucers.  I've been observing more closely today (day off and bored), and I can actually sit and watch them shrink in the mirror if I sit for a few minutes, but then when I get up and move around and come back, they are enlarged again.  They *only* seem to be dilated when I have just done something physically, because after a few minutes of rest, they shrink until I stand and walk again.

I honestly don't think it has much to do with the MDMA use.  I've used MDMA roughly two dozen times before that time, and never experienced it before.  I like the adrenal theory so far, since it seems to be tied in with me moving.  Is it possible that I overproduce adrenaline?  I have a regular checkup with my trusted doctor (ie: knows my habits  :tongue:) in a few weeks, so I'll ask him his opinion.

I'm starting vitamin therapy today (B vitamins, C, E) to see if it has any effect.  Its not necessarily a handicap, but it is crazy when people always tell you "D00d your pupils are whaaaaaaack" :smile:

Yeah, it's most probably not even drug related. However, it does seem like a symptom of something not being right neurologically, so I would have it looked into. Most puzzling... :crazy:

I had a neurological thing a while back. I would get these muscle spasms for the longest time. My muscles in any random area would contract, and it was like the muscles that weren't supposed to contract, did. Anyways it would pull on the tendons and stuff and be really painful. I still get them sometimes. Doctors didn't do shit really. Pretty much said I was crazy, and it was probably just sore muscles from skateboarding or something. Yeah so still after 2 years I still have them. Must be from skateboarding when a muscle in my arm startes twitching, lol. Anyways, maybe your just wearing really dark contact lenses, so your pupils need to dialate, lol.

On another note, you know how your eyes get all dialated when you trip, but kinda get all red and closed when your stoned? Anyways, a few friends and I kinda came up with a discussion, (we were stoned) that if you smoke weed while your tripping they'll counteract each other and your eyes will be normal. It was so funny, because i doubt that would happen, but at the same time I've NEVER looked at a mirror while tripping and stoned. Gotta get me a mirror, lol. Anyone ever done this?

I've got a pretty decent tolerance to bud so I don't usually get red eyes or anything anymore. I don't wear contact lenses or eyeglasses either. Who knows

Hmm, well if you all are right about the neurological problems then I'm really fucked. My right eye stays a bit more diilated than my left. Think I should go to the doc or just ride the oncoming insanity out?

One of my friends has permanently dilated eyes. It looks like he's on like 5 grams of mushrooms at all times.
And when he IS on mushrooms, he has almost no iris left :laugh:

That sounds promising, I'm not too worried about neurological problems so much anymore, although it could be signs of a ministroke or microstroke suffered from high blood pressure and body temp from the MDMA. Although if you are not showing signs of any other minor impairment i wouldn't be worried so much.

When you sit and watch them shrink you're obviously in the light? And they shrink with relaxation?

Is it noticable shrinkage, like shrink down to the level that would be appropriate for the light you're in?

Have you tried sitting in a completely dark room for several minutes then turning on the light and looking in the mirror?


My first guess was iridoplegia
upon reading your post. It's paralysis of the muscle (it's actually a sphincter [says what?]) that controls the dilation of your pupils.

But if they relax when you're not physically stimulated and hopefully respond to light, then i would investigate other routes.

I would check your resting bloodpressure if I were you, that could possibly cause your eye problems. Adrenaline fight or flight responses could be it, but i doubt it.

What is your resting heart rate?
And what is your resting BP?
Do you now have a sensitivity to light now?
Do your pupils respond to light?
Have the B vitamin regiments helped any?

Stay off the E for a while.
Besides it's not terribly good (repeated use) for your brain and synapses .

Also some people have naturally overly large pupils, not too big of a problem, although i suspect it could cause early blindness or impaired vision over time.

Most important, answer my above questions. I have a feeling though from reading your posts it's probably a relatively benign problem that will return to normal over time.

Although to give you a sure honest answer I'd prefer to have a check-up with you, but that can't be done.

Yes, I would say "average sized".  They never go down past filling half of my iris when I've checked, even on opiates.

Yes, my pupils remain dilated even with the sudden flood of light.  It takes roughly 4-5 minutes for them to shrink to half-dilation.

Yes!  They are definetly not dilated anywhere near as much today, but they are still not "normal" size.  I decided to start taking a multi-vitamin supplement with B vitamin supplements.  It seems to be improving so far :smile:

My uses were infrequent, generally once or twice every 6 months in small doses.  I'm not convinced by any medical evidence yet that this frequency and dosage is physically impairing :smile:  Interesting stuff to study though.

Thanks for replying, your post will help me a lot I'm sure.  I agree that is is probably a benign problem, and especially with vitamin supplements will be corrected or managed.  Once again thanks for the excellent post  :cool:

That's very infrequent , and i'd say that would cause no noticable problems as long a syou didn't continue on an every 6 mo. pace for 20 - 30 years.


I would even grab myself a sublingual regiment of the entire line of B vitamins through niacinamide.

Your vitals sound pretty good. So i'mf not convinced that it is a phsyical problem causing your iridoplegia (iridoparalysis). If anything it could be caused by a deficiancy of Vitamins especially B vitamins (as they're important for your brain function) and this could make it seem like you have a neurological problem. My guess is it's only a slight deficiancy and is really only affecting your pupils and not your personality (i hope). Continue with the vitamins to replenish your supply and i'm sure you'll recover fully.

What is all in my head?  The pupil dilation is in my eyes, specifically within the iris.  Hehe, I don't think I'm going crazy, just my pupils are :smile: 

I went through a period (short time ago) of thinking I was going crazy, but its receded.  I've accepted that we're all a little crazy in our own way  :wink:

I don't think my run with MDMA will last that long.  I've learned about all it has to offer.  :smile:
