    #11248379 - 10/14/09 07:31 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey, I'm looking at buying a new custom built computer. I live in Canada and searched around for the lowest priced site www.directcanada.com .

Looking to spend $1200-1400 preferably but willing to maybe spend more.

Here's what i got so far..

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.66GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 - $326.74

EVGA X58 Classified EATX LGA1366 DDR3 4PCIE-16 1PCI SLI SATA2 eSATA Dual GBLAN 1394 Motherboard - $442.92

Corsair XMS3 Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 8-8-8-24 Core i7 Memory Kit - $234.81

Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan - $113.56

Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black 1TB SATA2 7200RPM 4.2MS 32MB 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive Oem -$98.78

Antec Nine Hundred Mid Tower Gamer Case 900 Atx 9 Drive Bay No Ps Top USB2.0 1394 Audio - $111.94

Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H50 High Performance CPU Cooler System LGA775 LGA1366 LGA1156 AM2 AM3 - $88.22

What's a good video card? and I'm not too sure i need that motherboard so would like some advice on picking a decent one.

Gonna be using this computer for gaming and wanna be able to play everything on high. So can anyone help me out?

Thanks.

mobo, asus 6pt series.  the p6t is nice and about 250, u can get the se for a little less, but its not worth the stuff u give up.  there is a pro and deluxe model, but also not really worth the extra u pay.

cooling, look for a cool master v8 or the v10

case, do yourself a favor, if you are trying to make a bad ass pc, don't waste your $$ on a mid case, get a full.

other than that, u are on the right track, the i7 is awesome.  i clocked my i7 920 to 3.8 and it runs like a dream.  if you decide on the p6t, pm me and i'll share my bios settings so you can enjoy these speeds too.

edit: i forgot about the vid card, if u get the p6t, get what ever is the best one you can afford, or two of them, the p6t supports sli and crossfire, the p6t se only does crossfire.

also, you might look into getting a ssd to install your os on.  it will give you a ton of speed for the $$.

I can flash/jtag/repair 360's, pm for details.

I'm in the market for a new a PC as well and I'm looking to spend about the same amount of money.  I think for our price range the nVIDIA GTX 260 seems like a really good card.  They go for about 200 bucks.  I found that same processor on newegg.com for 279.99... but maybe it works out to be about the same when translated to Canadian currency.  Sorry.. I'm not familiar with the exchange rate.  That motherboard may be a lil' much... you'd probably be ok with the EVGA E758-A1 and it's quite a bit cheaper it seems.

I'm assuming you are going to run windows 7 for your OS.  I was skeptical about it at first, but after doing a bit of research it seems like the best OS to have for gaming.

exciting stuff.

If your motherboard uses SATA to connect to the hard-drives, look at Western Digital's Raptor series of 10,000 rpm drives.

Hard-drive access speed is directly tied the rpm.

Standard drive are 7,500.  If your games are drive intensive, your can easily see a 25 to 35 percent performance boost.

Good Luck.

or you can use a ssd instead of a hard drive for your operating system and use a 7500 hdd for media files ect and you will see a huge increase in operating speed.

I agree with SOME of this, get a different mobo, i haven't looked for a while, but i did hear the asus p6 boards are nice, though im personally a fan of DFI and Gigabyte boards, always done me great...i did use an asus for my very first amd build, and that mobo is still going tot his day, 8 days later.  Spend what is saved here on a better graphics card.

However, i disagree on the Full tower.  I bought one for my first build as well, and its just WAY to big for my tastes.  I have a CoolerMaster 690 (CM 690 is what its normally called).  its cheap, and is a great case with RIDICULOUS airflow, and a great size.  Unless your doing some crazy cooling besides air, you don't need that extra room for anything.

For the cooler, i would either get teh Thermalright Ultra Extreme or a copy of it and throw a nice 120mm fan on there...still one of the best designs from what i can tell.

peace

I like the gigabyte boards too

Do you want to use AMD or intel? I built one for someone and he used the new intel i7 and I really liked them. A little pricey but nice.

if you are  doing any overclocking you might not want to step up to the i7 quite yet. but otherwise, it's fine if you are willing to spend the money.

for a graphics card get 1 or 2 gtx285's if you happen to get an sli ready mobo

now that amd has some good black editions out i would take advantage of their great prices and performance.  i have an i7, it is lovely, but it is overpriced.  the only reason i bought it was because amd was slacking off and didn't have any black edition quad cores out yet.

and yes go with a DFI or Gigabyte...id lean more towards Gigabyte as it will be a bit more userfriendly and better support.  Ive used asus boards over 3 generations, and they all eventually failed on me.  they have some serious design flaws or something....that magically show up after the warrenty expires.  EVGA makes nice boards its the one i bought for my i7, however EVGA has really buggy bios's...so i can't recommend them either....plus they are noobs to motherboards, they have only been in the game for a short time compared to gigabyte.

as for the person who mentioned "sharing" motherboard settings to reach the same speeds, plug your ears he will get your OS currupted, or worse case cpu or motherboard fried, as any real overclocker knows each and every cpu, ram,mb is different even when talking about the same make/model.  you don't just "share" settings.

i don't see what the problem w/ i7's and overclocking is.  i clocked my 2.6 to 3.8 and it runs great.

Just because they are new? I don't understand either but I took it that's what he meant.

their is really nothing wrong with them. they just aren't very consistent, certainly not as consistent as some of the old wolfdales and yorkfields in overclocking.

but the i7's are a pretty cool chip if you don't overclock, but in all reality arent worth the money because you almost won't have any use for 4 cores, or 8 threads nowadays.

their are virtually no common applications that utilize anything more than the dual cores, other than something like computers in specialized environments like CAD, simulations (not games), lab computers etc.

and probably won't be a widespread use for the i7's for probably at least a year

well, in a year, my pc will be up to date.  now i realize that there aren't many programs that utilze my hole cpu, but i can throw 4 programs at once and be straight.  also, the new wolfenstein actually runs 6 streams, so gaming is already catching up.  this might not be the standard today, but will be tomorrow so why pay good money for a computer who's technology is already being phased out?

it doesn't matter if you preorder a chip that is coming out in a year...

when you pay for that chip it is already being phased out, lol.

not sure what part you guys were responding to but ill respond to your posts best i can.  i7's overclock great, there just overpriced, you get a much better deal with amd.  amd has great quad cores out in black editions so my vote for the  op is to hop on the amd gravy train....the money you save will dam near get you a 5870 gpu

and dont be fooled, amd will live up to your real world expectations...and hell they were giving away an extra core not that long ago cant beat that  lol

Whatever you do, I recommend basing your system on at least a fluorocarbon cooled Gallium P24 Undecacore CPU of 64 Terahertz and any of the EM stabilized gelstate Linutec 16 Petabyte RAM drives.

Wait, 2009 you say? Umm I go with whatever they say, yea.
