you certainly can buy windows install discs, they just tend to be expensive.

if it is just a recovery cd for your desktop you can't use it to reformat your laptop, because the recovery cd are usually just for restoring an existing installation of windows on a specific hardware set.

but if you are not actually reformatting your hard drive and just want to repair the windows on the laptop, then you may be able to use the disc.

sometimes the discs are formatted for oem equipment only.

if you can't get it to work shoot me a pm

i think i have some windows xp fresh install discs laying around somewhere. cd-key and all

i also have vista if your interested

Thanks. And both computers should be able to run fine at the same time?

Yeah, you can (and yes they do sell windows install discs, but they're atleast a couple hundred dollars).

before you reformat though, I would make sure I knew where to get the drivers for your laptop though. usually the manufacturer website will have the drivers for download. but you could also copy the drivers onto a seperate disc before you reformat, so it'll be easier to get it up and running again quicker. (you should be aware that when you reformat you probably wont have the drivers for your wireless and ethernet cards).

good luck

do you like windows 7?

i haven't had a chance to try it yet, i had to give up my computer build for financial reasons and i haven't been able to check it out since the very early beta was out.

is it worth seeking out?

Both PC's should beable to run fine at the same time.

Ive been doing misc pc work recently and all my XP codes are dead, but i found a great hack for XP.

Just follow the read me.

Ive used it on 5 different installs of XP pro SP2, no problems at all.

Win 7 is actually pretty nice, im running it on my HTPC.

it is very worth seeking out. I got it when the first beta came out, 6 month ago..then the rc..and now I have the RTM (retail) version. It is much smoother than vista and incredibly usable especially with searching within the windows explorer. Highly recommended.

a friend gave me a copy of windows 7 but its just files on my HDD right now. how do you guys reformat from files? the files wont fit on a disc or flash drive but i've heard you can use some sort of drive emulator thingy to do it? wouldnt a drive emulator crash when the computer is reformatted?
