German car guys. they had rear disk brakes before 1980.

Also, they use actual ball bearings not the pin type roller bearings like on most other cars of the time.

As seen here.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/REAR-WHEEL-Bearing-Kit-SUZUKI-LT-300-E-1987-1989_W0QQitemZ230382486720QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090929?IMSfp=TL0909291410003r32841

They tend to start squeaking rhythmically.. with the rhythm increasing with speed.. long long before grinding

And they wear out right at around 140k.

The gas thing throws me off, if you're just rolling along without any throttle it still makes the noise right?

It makes no noise when rolling at a steady 40mph. It makes the grinding when I go from stationary(stop light) to moving(green light).

As you go from 0-40 does the sound... go squeak squeak squeak faster the closer you are to 40?

When you press your brakes does it go away ?

If it is the wheel bearing I would advise to take it to a shop that works on German cars, you either need special Mercedes tools, to take the trailing arm off and take it to a machine shop, or a mechanic that knows how to craft a tool to pull and press that bearing in... It's a true bitch.

If it's the brakes and you don't need new disks than you could get away for 200 easily, shit do it yourself for 20 bucks if you have the tools it's not hard.

Wheel bearing.. 3-400.

UPDATE:

Just got back from Midas.

He originally wanted to charge me $800 to replace all the rotors/brake pads, since the front ones are wearing too. I laughed, and was like "Nah, it's cool- I'll come back next week." Then he told me that I should really get the rear rotors replaced*.

The mechanic showed me my rear rotors/brake pads. The rotors were completely worn out and were making metal to metal contact. The mechanic said the next to go would be the calipers, unless I got that shit replaced today, along with new brake pads.

The Grand total was $345.11, $200 for parts, and $125 for labor. Yes, I know I got ripped off, but I don't have the luxury of time to be shopping around for the best deals in the area.

For the front rotors/brake pads, I'm going to get them done in San Diego, where my dad knows a mechanic who does real cheap labor.

Mechanic also said my struts/shocks were shot, which I already knew about, and said those need to be replaced in 6-9 months. My new question to you car officinado's is this: Can I keep driving my car for another 2-3 years *without* replacing the struts/shocks?

actually that's a decent price, 25 years ago I had some shop tell me
that it would cost me $500 or more to do the same for my car but they
were including the replacement on the wheel cylinder on the rear brakes
(drums), it was an $8 part, I told them to fuck off, the guy said he
couldnt let me drive out with my car in that condition, I made him get
it off the rack and drove it out of his shop

I went home and for the same $500 I replaced the rear end with a
corvette IRS differential and had 4 wheel disks on my 74 pontiac

mercedes is a great car, I have a friend with more than 900k miles on his,
the seat is falling through the floor and it has a bunch of other dumb
problems but it's still running strong

take care of it and your grand kids could be driving it one day

assuming some girl gets drunk enough to let you do it

Yeah, my sister drove her 300E up to 450,000 miles.

I plan on driving this car for 2-5 more years, depending on repairs needed, etc. My dad got expensive work done on the engine/transmission- so I owe it to him to keep the car for a while.

it's well worth keeping, most of the work you'll have to do will be minor
and half the people here can give advice on what's wrong with it and tell
you how to test things and often times repair it... valuable knowledge

and if you decide to sell it, it will have a decent resale value if it's
in good cosmetic shape

UPDATE at 7:00PM(PST)

Verdict: Prisoner was wrong, Rustifier was right.

Got my car back at 5PM, drove it to my parking structure(less than a mile away from the mechanic)- the grinding noise was worse than before I took it to the mechanic. I call the manager back, and he told me to come in and take it for a test drive with one of the mechanics.

We go for a drive, and the mechanic can clearly hear the grinding noise. He takes it for another test drive, this time- by himself, to mess with the car(basically drive like a maniac to pinpoint where the problem is). When he gets back, he tells me he is 100% sure that it is the bearing under the rear left wheel.

The manager said he will call me tomorrow with an estimate. I called my dad, told him about this shit, and we decided that I'll bring the car down to san diego to our trusted mechanic I mentioned earlier, to fix the bearings/bushings.

My dad is pretty sure that the Midas guy was a crook because he told me you usually don't have to replace the rotor, just the brake pads. And me, not knowing shit about cars, couldn't really say anything one way or the other.

What I can tell all of you is that I am going to take a couple automotive classes and learn my shit about cars, because I'm sick of being pushed around by dishonest mechanics. Thanks for reading, cheers.

that's actually a great idea... but dont feel like taking a class when there maybe good youtube etc video.

I am really not interested so much in fixing my car myself - outside of changing oil and tires, really basic stuff, I'll take it to a mechanic. But I feel that learning which atypical noises and actions are benign, and which are potentially costly as hell, would be great knowledge to have.

anyone know a quality site or video source?

I guess I should have mentioned the Mercedes I owned and my BMW were both built by me. sorry. =x

If you have a garage I can tell you how to do it yourself, I'd be weary of letting anyone who doesn't love the car take the suspension apart on an old car and put it back together for you. You could do it youself for the cost of the wheel bearing.

There's a tool at autozone that has a 56mm round piece that fits on a bolt, you can use that to pull and push the bearing in the trailing arm. It's pretty simple to do, there's lots of write ups on how to do it on my BMW on bimmerforums.com, I'm never got into the Mercedes community though.

I'll can't find the fucking tool on the site, it's got a big round black piece and a long black bolt and it's in the lower right of the little mat they have of all the rental tools at the store. fuck

maybe one of you guys who work on American cars can chime in and tell him what it is.

it's really easy to work on cars, you're a bright guy going to college in the medical field right? no need to take classes, just read some forums for you car. that's all I did, and I've rebuilt engines, no one taught me shit about cars.

I'm telling you man go to http://www.benzworld.org or some other benz forum and you will find tons of teks for anything on your car.  Ways to get around shit without buying the specialized tools for you car. No need to take classes, find an interest in fixing shit yourself and use the internet.

This is the method I used to build my first computer.

With that, the only thing I had to lose was a computer. With this, I am facing the potential loss of fucking up my car and totally being screwed in getting to my classes on time.

With taking 5 upper div classes, I gotz no time learn DIY strategies- I appreciate the point in the right direction, but I'm going to take it to a trusted mercedes mechanic down in San Diego. He's actually the guy that I bought the car from.

and I'm still taking those classes, nukka! Zomg, why did I say that.
