Never said it did, the presence of the deficit is the fucking point why we shouldn't spend billions on bullshit like this. a smart investment is to go GREEN. set up the solar panels, natural gas lines, fuck off of oil. feed the hungry, ...ect

for 2010 Nasa's budget is 18.7 billion

Yes is a lot, but its a drop in the bucket for most ALL plans that are up for debate atm.

A great deal of new innovations useful here on earth have resulted from space travel. Taking the attitude of "ignore space and fix our problems here"  seems to be the basic argument for people against this project, but that wasn't how the thread started out at all; it was sensationalist, comparing it to things like Ebola and AIDS.

We're going to have to explore more of space sooner or later in order to survive as a species and plans to build a lunar base and fueling station is a proactive first step. NASA is not the one being short sighted here; if anything, amongst all our government committees and organizations we have running things for us they may be one of the only ones actually doing their jobs.

And, just because the Indians 'discovered water' themselves isn't really an argument for anything. There's probably loads of additional data that India didn't collect, and loads more that will still need to be collected after this mission in order to plan building a base there.

Seriously we are retarded for not using more nuke plants.
They are massively powerful AND they have no atmospheric emissions.
I'm not saying nuclear waste is a good thing but it is NOT an unsolvable problem and right now nuclear power is the perfect band-aid for our greenhouse emissions problem.


BTW, to whoever was bitching about NASA -- NASA, who's entire budget for all of their programs, is under $20 billion a year -- being not worth its funding in this dumbfuck economic fluctuation: are you even aware of our military budget?
For that matter, have you just looked at the way the USA behaves?
NASA is one of the only things the United States does that's still worth being proud of, and you think its worth less annually than what we spent every 2 months in Iraq?

America needs to smarten the fuck up, and that is NOT going to happen by funding NASA less.

i agree, fuck all that wind and solar shit, they're horribly inefficient. we should be funding research for fusion technology.

and don't forget about geo-thermal too. probably the best thing we can invest in right now.

NASA is the Air and Space Administration, not the Solve All The World's Problems Bureau.
The latter organization does not exist, and if you want it to then you'd better start yourself a grassroots movement or something.

I'm not saying moon research is "as important as" preventing a global climate crisis, but it's what NASA does, and removing funding from one of the few great large-scale scientific organizations in the world is NOT a step in the right direction towards addressing large-scale scientific problems.

They're letting the main module crash because before it does it will have all the time it needs to transmit the mission's data back to Earth.
This allows them to plan a much simpler flightpath and avoid the significant expense of recovering a satellite when they don't need to.

These men know what the moon is made of, they have robots that can go there and collect data like the mars missions.

BTW did you guys know they launched that shit months ago june 18th to be exact?

No, "the govenment" cannot "launch a missile" at the moon. NASA is not "the government," they're a scientific agency which pretty much follows its own agenda (as it should).
You can call it a missile, but I maintain that this is a distortion of words. The LCROSS impactor is not even close to a weapon.

The second satellite is collecting the data from the explosion to see what the water content is.
It will send the information back to earth before it too crashes into the moon
