Earth and Moon as Viewed from Mars
    #1570525 - 05/22/03 11:32 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Here is the first satelite photo of the Earth as seen from mars

Thu May 22, 4:58 PM ET

Earth as seen from Mars is shown in this colorized photograph taken by NASA (news - web sites)'s Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft while orbiting the Red Planet on May 8, 2003. The picture shows Earth from 86 million miles away as a small blue dot orbited by its even smaller moon. (AP Photo/NASA/JPL/Malin Space Science Systems, ho)

Come on now,

This is one fucking hell of an event. Over 80 million fucking miles away and here is a picture of the Earth. Doesn't that resonate with anyone.

It's crazy to look at that planet and realize how much beauty it supports.

Given 86,000,000 miles away. and light travels at 186,000 mi/s.

This means that what appears to be the present state of the earth (from the perspective of mars at that time) was really 7.7 minutes in the past!

interestingly, no one EVER witnesses the true present state of anything as there is some amount of delay in light bouncing off of everything you see. we literally live in the past.

Well, even that is a relative.  If you consider the idea of a singularity, then everything just "is".  There is no past, present or future.  I believe this singularity is "god" or as I like to say "all that is".  Somehow, what we are and see is like an inverted bubble to this singularity.  Picture the infinity symbol. consider the one end "A" and the other end "B".  Move the intersection point closer and closer to A.  When the intersection gets to the point that it can go no further without losing its properties, that is it.  A, is now the closest representation I can come up with to this singularity, and the big bubble on the other side is where we are.  And the intersection is VERY important!!  Did that make sense?  Or am I just sounding crazy?  Or maybe now some of you understand what really is!!!

But yes, you are right!

The average distance from the sun to the earth is 92,955,807.25 miles. This obviously changes throughout the course of the year. The speed light travels at is 186,000 miles per second. So 9.30 *10^7 divided by 1.86 *10^5 = 500 sec divided by 60 seconds in a minute = 8.3 minutes. I did this quickly, and I didn't check my math, but it sounds about right. That is the average, it changes throughout the year.
