is Palin positioning herself as a libertarian?
    #11113631 -

this question comes straight off a headline today on drudge.  apparently she had a lot to say in her debut foreign speech today in Hong Kong.  among some of her statements:

Quote:
Ms. Palin blamed the U.S. Federal Reserve's low interest-rate policy of previous years for setting the stage for last year's global financial crisis. She opposed appointing the Fed as the chief overseer of systemic risk in the U.S. financial system. "The words 'fox' and 'henhouse' come to mind. The Fed's decisions have created the bubble," she said.

Quote:
“The speech was wide-ranging, very balanced, and she beat all expectations,” said Doug A. Coulter, head of private equity in the Asia-Pacific region for LGT Capital Partners.

“She didn’t sound at all like a far-right-wing conservative. She seemed to be positioning herself as a libertarian or a small-c conservative,” he said, adding that she mentioned both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. “She brought up both those names.”

Quote:
Cameron Sinclair, another speaker at the event, said Mrs. Palin emphasized the need for a grassroots rebirth of the Republican Party driven by party leaders outside Washington.

Quote:
"We got into this mess because of government interference in the first place," the former Republican U.S. vice presidential candidate said Wednesday at a conference sponsored by investment firm CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets. "We're not interested in government fixes, we're interested in freedom," she added.

Quote:
She described her political philosophy as a "common-sense conservatism," and said the free-market policies of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher should be guides for how to get out of the current economic situation.

Quote:
She called for tax cuts as well as the elimination of the capital-gains and estate tax. Then, she said, the world will "watch the U.S. economy roar back to life."

Quote:
"It's just common sense that government attempts to solve problems like health care problem will just create new problems." She called for "market friendly" health care reform that gives tax breaks to individuals to buy health insurance.

what do u guys think?  is she trying to seize on the growing small-government movement in the US, and distance herself from the current neocon impression of the republican party?

"How can we discuss reform without addressing the government policies at the root of the problems? The root of the collapse? And how can we think that setting up the Fed as the monitor of systemic risk in the financial sector will result in meaningful reform? The words “fox” and “hen house” come to mind. The Fed’s decisions helped create the bubble. Look at the root cause of most asset bubbles, and you’ll see the Fed somewhere in the background."

:yesnod:

“Lack of government wasn’t the problem, government policies were the problem. The marketplace didn’t fail. It became exactly as common sense would expect it to,” she said. “The government ordered the loosening of lending standards. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates low. The government forced lending institutions to give loans to people who as I say, couldn’t afford them. Speculators spotted new investment vehicles, jumped on board and rating agencies underestimated risks. So many to be blamed on so many different levels, but the fact remains that these people were responding to a market solution created by government policies that ran contrary to common sense,”

Hahaha, as I recall they did this quite willingly.

Easy, we can talk about deregulation, predatory lending, private bundled mortgages, bad risk assessment, lack of sufficient capital, sub prime mortgages, a lack of equity in home, abuse of refinancing, and zero accountability in the private sector.

Hey! here is an idea, HOW ABOUT WE HAVE THE LIBERTARIANS BE THE LIBERTARIANS?? With growing support of getting back to the constitution , reigning in fed, returning to sound money, reducing the size of government..

HOW ABOUT WE LEAVE THESE POSITIONS TO THE LEADERS WHO HAVE ALWAYS HELD THEM RATHER THAN THE FUCKTWATS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE ORGY THAT FUCKED UP AMERICA SO BAD???

Palin is a joke. The only positioning she should do is doggy while i plow that. She still looks good at her age and looked better before. I still dont think shes truly as gorgeous as a lot of people think. I wouldnt kick her out of bed for eating crackers but maybe for talking

I dont consider myself libertarian but I truly admire them. I think in the coming years I would like to see the Republican party go the way of the dinosaur like it is and Libertarians start to take power. I think rather than having Democrats and Republicans who seem polar opposites, the convervatives disappear with their hijacked Republicans and the populace as a whole start becoming more like the party of Jefferson with the help of libertarians and like in Jefferson day the traitors are... well the not Jefferson types.
