straw problems
    #11099204 -

I'm having trouble with my straw, when it's colonizing water builds up on the top it's causing contams. I use a perforated plastic sheet to cover it during colonization. I'm thinking maybe my straw is to wet and or I need to drill holes in the bottom of my plastic tub and use a perforated plastic sheet on the bottom as well. any suggestions?

I have read that if you get contamination before your first flush there is more than likely a problem with your pasteurization technique.
I realize that's not much help but you may want to start there and make sure that's not the problem.

I don't think it's that, I've had plenty of successful tubs, I think the problem is water is building up on the surface of the substrate and standing water is a breeding ground for contams. I think either there's to much water in the substrate and or it needs drainage. Also I've been using earths tongue syringes and now I've read nothing but bad things about them,RR said that them being packed with spores they either don't fruit well or don't fruit at all due to so many strains trying to fruit at once. I had a rez tub that didn't fruit at all that started with one or their syringes so we'll see what happens with this straw tub I cased today.

I don't understand how water is "building up" on the top of your substrate. If you are watering it too much, stop.

I've learned the hard way about purchasing spores from non-site vendors. It was a brand noob mistake that I will not make again.

well, just squeeze out all of the water in the straw... and u shouldnt have any water build-up. hehe... with straw you have to use alot of colonized grains mixed evenly so that it can be completley colonized in a week... if not it will get contaminated. ive never been able to get the ratio right so now i dont like using straw for indoor grows, but it is an amazing substrate outdoors...
