The patterns in the static

For as long as I can remember I have always had a layer of static over my vision, on the same level of vision where one gets blind spots from staring into a light and similar to the level of vision one sees floaters (organisms) on their lenses. It has always been most prominent in the dark, and for the longest time I simply atrributed it to poor night vision.

As I grew older and started taking drugs that dialate the pupil the static became more prominent, so I once again assumed it was simply poor night vision with a mix of retina scarring or what have you. I figured placing myself in a dark room with bright lights (rave, concert) while on drugs with pupil dilation was the cause, that and the sum total of the time I've spent in my life staring directly into the sun. These ideas may not be incorrect.

However this summer was my honeymoon so-to-speak with LSD, and whilst tripping I would get the ol' acid eyes, or kaleidescope eyes, or whatever you feel like coining that wide eyes looking-at-nothing/everything stare that folk tripping on LSD seem to pick up. Watching the static on acid is where the patterns, visuals, and geometric hallucinations really lie for me. They are never ending, and though I've seen similar ones, I have never seen the same one twice.

Two things to note: Firstly, despite my attempts to explain this to a few people the only person who can relate is my partner, and she has been experiencing these for quite some time, since the beginning of her psychedelic experimentation. Secondly, for a while I had an old assignment from elementary school where at a young age I wrote down that I "enjoy heads down time because I just close my eyes and watch the colours" verbatim, and I distinctly remember these patterns and how I can see them when closing my eyes. These colours and patterns I saw then, are the same premise of what I see now, though they were in much less clarity.

Now I see these patterns on a daily basis, it almost seems to be some sort of reflex that can be trained. I can see them briefly and on a smaller scale (almost too small to focus on) in a sober state, but a little marijuana (and my guess is the resulting dialated pupils) brings them out to full clarity if I focus my attention on them.

I've done my own inconclusive thinking on the subject, and have thrown around some ideas for what these could be. My question though is, have you experienced this? And, what the fuck are these geometric hallucinations, and where am I seeing them?

this layer of static is amazing, personally it came alive when I started smoking marijuana. It doesn't make much sense to me... it seems to be a product of self consciousness

My first reaction was the question the presence of a third eye, as I am seeing these hallucinations but not with my eyes, they seem independent of any light perception.

Sadly I doubt there is anyone who has any real insight, I don't know what it is and why it is caused and I'll probably be left with only personal speculations for the rest of my life.

I had a similar question about people who wear glasses or contacts.  I myself use contacts while tripping and notice that the visuals seem to be independent from my actual vision.  This is similar to what you are describing, although my situation doesn't involve visual damage.

When you are in complete darkness, do you see absolute black or is there a static?

I still have the usual visual distortions, wonderful colours, and awe filled effects of having such dialated pupils. There is this, and there are these patterns. Is this how it is for you?


I ask because I am curious if these things are present in everyone but slip by unnoticed as many processes do. As far as I can tell, these have always been present but lacked the attention I am giving them now, and they are not unique to only me. This leaves me wondering, are they present with everyone, or only a select few?

I HAVE THE SAME THING. When I close my eyes or if I am in the dark is see the "static". It isn't like the static white noise on a TV. It is very difficult to describe. It's colors like someone got a huge box of pencils with a lot of colors and went ape shit on my eyes.

The patterns however a large number of people report. I believe is called the Kaleidoscope affect. I get this too(it may just be people with the static vision)

When I trip on lsd and have all of my lights out, I do experience a static that is independent from my literal vision.

This can be compared to listening to music while tripping.  I get a sense of the music that feels to be outside of just my hearing. Sometimes I feel as if I am perceiving it through my eyes.  I don't see it, but I feel it...

And yes, geometric shapes are a huge dominator of my closed eye/dark room visuals.
