What do you think in order are the best ones, I was considering trying Serato and buying a separate time code vinyl for it.

Like this one :vaped:

Yeah, if you're doing it exclusively on a laptop, you probably wouldn't bother with Serato.  I just like it because of the interface with turntables.

I've got one Pioneer CDJ-800 (getting the other real soon ) and a VMX 300 mixer that I got for $5. Can't wait to get my other one, I had a play around with my friend's 100s and it's a blast.

CDJ's or nothing.

Or you should start off on vinyl because that is the real way PROS learned how to spin on even if they do spin CDJs. Carl Cox, started playing on vinyl, Armin Van Buuren, started playing on vinyl, pretty much any old school DJ who is famous today and rocks sets started playing on vinyl, you can gradually get into CDJs but once you have vinyl down you have CDJs down and then you cant go from both a digital and vinyl collection to put into your sets. If you want to get into scratching then vinyl is a must, and don't get Numark get Technics MK2s or above. Numark is a good brand to start off on as long as they are direct drive, don't even bother with belt-drive turntables they are not even worth the hastle.

I was in the rave scene for 6 years and have moved onto the burner scene, I have seen both good and shitty DJs. Quality usually depends on how long you have been spinning for, what you learned on, for instance a 2 month DJ who learned on CDJs should not be playing out at a club, talk about trainwrecks left and right.

While I learned on vinyl and prefer it, I mostly disagree with what you're saying.  I have a friend who started on CDJ and is really great on them, but kinda sucks when using just vinyl.  He can still throw down an awesome set, doesn't matter what he learned on.

My point is:  there are lots of ways to DJ, and you shouldn't discount someone for not having a background based in vinyl.

One more sorry for double posting.
My first rave Q-Bert was spinning and I got to see him spin.
He has since then been my favorite scratcher.

I have been raised by all vinyl playing DJs, even if they do play CDJS they still have a large collection of vinyl. You learn the old before you learn the new, you should tell your friend to learn vinyl and I guarantee he will improve so much at CDJs. Its just a need to know, kind of like driving a stick shift.

All I'm gonna say is, if you're looking to scratch. Ditch the Stanton, get Serato, and a set of SL-1200's off of eBay or just even one for scratching and a CDJ (Pioneer). Variety is key.

Where would one even begin to learn how to DJ/mix/produce?...

The past year or two i have sorta become interested in messing around a little bit.

I don't even know where to start?...

Here's my story about how I learned to dj:

I went to my first rave in 1996, and went to a few more over the next couple years.  From 1998-2000 I went to at least one a week.  I got to know and become friends with a bunch of local dj's who were really cool people.  They'd let me fuck around on their equipment a bit, and I got to know some basics.

By 2001 I had become completely fed up with the whole "rave scene" but I still loved the music and wanted to be involved with it.  I bought my own gear, and did a mixture of self-teaching and just hanging out, spinning with other dj's of varying skill level.  After a while, I had learned.  To an extent, I'm still learning.  You'll never know/be able to do everything.

technics SL-1210mk5, vestax pmc-05-pro2 mixer

i have some speakers but no amp, just headphones, would love to get serato, but not enough :money:

I haven't scratched in a while, and really, it's not difficult to get good at it, it's just too competitive out there. There are a lot of good scratchers, so it's more like I just do it for the hell of it whenever i have time to spare.

It's super fun to scratch with a head full of :lsd:

If I had producing equipment I would love to make my own music, but don't have the time or :money:

I don't really want to sell my set, but i might since I don't use it as much as I used to.

There are forums out there for djing, you just have to look.

The best way to learn is practice, learn beat matching and start with baby scratches, then move on to chirps and crab scratches, and beat juggling.

i might give drum and bass a try, just wish I could find some D&B vinyl, preferably liquid.

or i could get serato  that would be sick.

but not enough :money:

and if i had :money: i would probably be buyin dr00gz with it.

I have numark decks and absolutely love them. I don't really get the never ending battle of digital vs analogue. It's almost 2010, its quite obvious where things are heading...to not embrace the future is going to leave you behind.

In the end, the only thing that matters is how your music sounds, and how well you are able to express yourself through your tools. This means learning what you have, regardless of make/model, and using the fuck out of it.

Decent book on how to DJ: How to DJ properly
Producing electronica: Dance Music Manual

Alot of books get outdated fast once you are fully aware of the fundamentals. Places like KVR will keep you updated though.

Computers can do pretty much everything these days too, and while pointing and clicking isnt much fun, a MIDI controller will be much cheaper than buying a bunch of new hardware. The biggest mistake people make when trying to learn is buying as much shit as possible. You don't need much to do alot, but you must learn what you have inside and out. Tons of new gear = tons of new gear you don't know how to use or have the time to dedicate to each piece.

However the book is called How to DJ RIGHT

Its a collective of DJ skills, I recommend it. It has taught me a lot.. They got a decent size section on scratching.

The best way to learn how to DJ, esp with Vinyl is by practicing 6 hours a day. There are definitely a lot of good videos and books out there, but nothing beats having your own equipment, getting blazed, and just going into your own world for a bit. Do that daily, and before you know it, you can mix.

^ True dat, listening to your music and knowing your tracks and just spinning all day when you have the time will boost your jedi powers.

Whenever I smoke past my comfort level, I feel and hear a new amazing song everytime and it evolves into another song over and over and over. It keeps me practicing guitar, because I know the more I each my hands the more of it can come out. Same goes with pre-production. That's my motivation to excel in music, it would be a waste to let it all go unheard by others.

And there's nothing more rewarding than listening to that great mix you made, and getting just toasted and sitting back and knowing it came from you. It's not like I'm priding myself on being better than anyone, I just feel rewarded in improvement.

Good Work.

I've been getting into Sampling lately. Have nothing of my own but have a lot of access to gear.

Roland SP-404/555

Random Loop machines my buddies have, circuit bending. You name it I've probably fooled around with it in the last couple months.

As for producing some real results, that usually comes in the physical instrument world where I play drums/sing for various projects.

Been producing/exploring through Reason, Ableton and other software to that effect.

That and searching for music each and every day.
