That's cool, you must have been one of those kids who was always tapping their fingers to beats in your head and humming melodies like me.

I'm extra interesting in learning how to scratch, I can't wait for the moment when I first set it up and blaze with my entire library at my fingertips.

I use 2 Technic 1200's, a Vestax PCV-175 mixer, and Sony silvers for headphones.  That's my optimal setup, I don't really care much for laptop dj'ing.  And fuck using an iPod.  While I don't completely eschew new tech (I think Serato is great), I prefer using gear similar to what I learned on.

Furthest I really deviate from that is that I will occasionally use CDJ's if they're set up where I'm playing at.  I don't really care for them at all, but I do like being able to play tracks that have/will not come out on vinyl.

I like the idea of Serato and Traktor Scratch because it's got the original vinyl feel when you use the timecode. It's got the best of both worlds and makes for a cheap but powerful setup. I already have a Macbook, headphones, and headphone amp, so with an external sound card, mixer and turntable I only need to spend $460 more and I should have a pretty respectable setup.

I have a looong ways to go with DJing  though, it took me a full year of "intense" mixing to really get a good grasp on it. (You can't really intensely mix, LOL but I did it very frequently.)

It's a Numark USB controller. I'm sure Traktor can do everything your CDJ can, plus who wants to scratch with CD's? I have all my music on my computer.

Vinyl is dead and expensive, CDJ is gay.

Digital = win.

A good set-up is just part of it, though.  Along with actual mixing skill (you know, beat-matching and whatever tricks/scratching you want to do), track selection is still of utmost importance.  And then, having great tracks doesn't really mean too much if you don't know how to arrange and weave them together to fit what you're trying to do.

I've still got a ton of shit to learn about dj'ing too, and I've been at it for years.  It's a constant learning experience, you can always step yer shit up.

I use my FLAC library on my computer, all digital with a super sensitive turntable shaped controller.

Digital can be great, there are some DJ's I really admire who do everything in ableton or other programs, BUT vinyl is not "dead" and will never be irrelevant.

It is expensive, though.

Plus I produce music so I can make beats in logic and bounce them straight to the turntables. That's why digital wins. You can even use real vinyl if you want. Or put your 16 bit cd in the computer drive. Or record your vinyl at around 3,000kbps in FLAC if you wanna.

It all depends on the kind of music you're mixing, but in the end, digital IMO gives you more variety, accuracy, and sound quality than vinyl. Scratching is merely an "effect" that can be added in the digital world lol.

See, that's what's great about Serato or Traktor.  Getting dubplates cut for EVERY tune you want to play is very unreasonable.  But, it is cool to have a 10" or 12" of something that no one else in the world has.

I don't produce beats, so none of this actually matters to me though.  In fact, I've really fallen off- all my shit's in storage right now and I haven't spun at a party in like 2 months.

There definitely are some hidden treasures out there in vinyl, especially with what you can turn those treasures into. Don't disagree with you there. Though, I also produce my own beats, melodies, sounds, songs, etc. and the ease of using your newly made tracks are important. Serato is awesome, but I believe Serato works best with turntables. There are other more accurate pieces of software out there that most people don't even know about.
