Hey

Just got a midi keyboard from a buddy's buddy... m-audio keystation 49e is what it says. it's pretty basic but I just spent about an hour playing around with it.. this track is what I came up with...

The drums are from a field recording of me salvaging and taking the nails out of some hardwood floor. =]

Hope you like it!

Word, I looked at those, but I ended up with a Zoom H4. (not the new H4n, those were $150 more, but more awesome). I really like it. I use it for band practice, I record samples at home, and I take it out with me to various places and get soundscape stuff (early morning at the beach is good noises)... and it's also a 4track. :awesome:

I've heard good & bad things about all the digital recorders, it just depends on what you're looking for exactly. =]

I'm partial to tascam products.I would totally go with the dr-07 for the price but the 100 has two preamped xlr mic inputs along with line level inputs.

I have been seeing the zoom h4n in sine nagazines lately.I have no experience with zoom products though.

hmmm

The H4 has a little learning curve, but it's not bad. The H2 is a lot more user friendly, but the H4n does a lot more.

I ended up w/ the H4 because it was the only digital portable recorder in my budget ($300 or so) that had 1/4" jacks, and not just 1/8". I can't stand 1/8" jacks, they almost always fail on me eventually. Plus, I'd like to build some contact mics, waterproof them and cast them into the bay. :awesome: 1/4" jacks will sound better and be sturdier. (and it has two XLR inputs too)

Edit: But honestly, for most field recordings I'm just using the built in condensers w/ a wind shield. They're pretty nice. Here's a minute long sample of a river on Mt. Rainier.

It has 1/4 line inputs?Fucking sweet.

Also I wasnt aware of it having xlr ins either.I am gonna have to take a closer look at these.

The recording sounded really good.A little eq could do wonders. Can you post a sample of something that was recorded inside? An acoustic instrument or any indoor found sounds?

I have not heard a tascam recording yet.I should before I commit.

yep =]

It handles really loud noises well, too. This is a recording of a track hoe smashing a bunch of construction debris in a 40 yard dumpster, a few feet away.

Seems like lows are this things strong point and the highs the weakest.

Some of that might just be the mic placement. For instance, the track hoe was recorded from below, and the 40 yard dumpster was rattling and booming right next to it.

It picked up all the treble on my banjo-ukelele real well.

I think Tascam has samples of the DR1(or07, or all of them probably)...

Before I bought mine, I swear I found a site that had samples of a bunch of different recorders... the difference, for the most part, is negligible. The mics are set up in different ways, though. My condensers are set up X-Y.

It's all personal preference. =]

(and price)

I have logged in this once so that I can set the "last seen" feature up.  let the faggots flow forth into OTD and have it.  Its funny how they all grew nuts after I left.  I'm not here, I'm not reading, but I urge you all to keep melting down over me.  I know, I hurt alot of people, and they deserved it.  epic win for me, epic fail for you.

ythan, you rock dude.  i feel that my time at the shroomery was very positive and enjoyable, but this site is no longer for me. im not mad or upset or disappointed, i just want no part in a pg rated faggot festival.

I don't have any other condenser mics to compare with, so I can't really tell if there's a significant difference anyway, haha. But it sounds nice.
