damn, programming drums is kinda hard

Any tips on programming drums? i use an emu1820 soundcard and a midi keyboard with battery/sonar.

I can get a decent beat going but it takes me a while.

Making nice sounding drum beats always takes a while. Play with velocity to make the drums sound more 'real' and less mechanic.

I make drum beats hit by hit. First I always think about what kind of beat I want, then I usually start with the kick for example and work my way down from there. Basics first, then additional percussion.

Also for learning how beats are made listen very carefully to artists you like, preferably with headphones and eyes closed, and listen to the drums (or other aspects of the music). You can learn a lot from just listening!

You're playing your beats real time with a keyboard? That's gonna be a bit tedious and probably won't sound very tight unless you're really meticulous or your timing is impecable. I'd suggest using a step sequencer instead. Although using a keyboard is good for "humanizing", ie: giving a more natural feel to the part. But you can do that with a good step sequencer like fruity loops.

lol i hate that. i took a midi class that used some crappy program with no step sequencing.

it was almost fucking impossible!

I've made some kinda neat stuff by using a keyboard (a computer keyboard, no less) to make my beats in real-time. I used ableton live, and after I'd program the drums, I could go back and step-sequence / chop / add whatever I wanted. It works really well, and adds a lot of personal flair to the music. =]

Right on. I'll also add that I wouldn't suggest using the "humanize" feature itself in a program like Fruity Loops, but instead moving the notes yourself to achieve whatever effect suits the piece. Maybe moving a few hi-hat notes slightly off place, or perhaps placing a snare beat continually just behind the beat to create a subtle anticipated feel. The piano roll feature in FLStudio is very useful for this type of thing as you can place your notes just about anywhere you want. The more you get in there and do your own beat placement, the more original and satisfying your stuff will be. Depending on what you're going for of course. Sometimes a stright up quarter note kick drum is just what you need.

Playing with a keyboard is great. As long as you keep everything quantized. and mix it down.

also, with drums. EQuing makes or breaks.

you also might try something like an m-audio trigger finger, or an akai mpc

Yeah i'm getting some better beats going now, i had too much latency because i forgot to change a setting.

What i do is play some parts of the beat like snare and bass drum then record hi-hats and stuff after that. then i qauntitize where i need to. I still add some notes with the mouse.

sometimes mistakes can lead to interesting results, especially when you edit in Midi mode. Sometimes I duplicate a drum instrument and insert it in a new track and replace the drum sounds with other samples. god is in the details.
