Lycoperdon pyriforme is a reasonable guess. When they are young and the spore mass is pure white they are edible, although nothing to write home about.

They're beautiful and one of the rare puffballs that grow on logs.
ToxicMan is right - Lycoperdon pyriforme (pear shaped puffball).
