That depends completely on the farmer. Some farmers are very nice about itm and will let you tirelessly search their fields, while others will threaten to call the cops, with a shotgun in their hands. I would recommend always asking before searching a field, its good manners, and can save you a trespassing and in some cases a posession charge.

When I was much younger, my dad told me that anyone he found on our land that he doesn't know he'd shoot at. He also said that if someone came to his door to ask permission, he'd hand 'em a beer.

Should I look for any specific type of dung for this species, Or does it grow on anything decomposing?

I've been thinking about asking about this species. It seems there is some confusion classifying this specie and other similar panaeolus. Here's some info i found at mykoweb.com :
In reply to:

Panaeolus papilionaceus is characterized by a grey-brown, smooth bell-shaped cap with appendiculate margin, dark mottled gills with whitish edges, a slender, fragile stipe and a habit of growing on horse/cow dung or in herbivore-enriched pastures. Until recently, this species was a part of a confusing group mushrooms that included Panaeolus campanulatus, P. sphrinctrinus and P. retirugis. However, work by Gerhardt (1996) indicates the latter are conspecific, P. papilionaceus being the oldest valid name. Another dung inhabiting Panaeolus that may be encountered in our area is P. semiovatus a relatively large species which has a smooth, pale colored cap and an annulus.

I would apreciate any thoughts about this issue.
Thanks,

MAIA
