Build a SLUG FENCE??

I was reading somewhere on some "Mushroom Site" (that sold spores) (can't remember but it was a sponser) anyway... In the "Directions" for some of the outdoor medicinal "patches" it said that prevention of slugs is achieved thru a "Slug Fence" ...:confused2:Ideas like this  not to mention post LIKE THIS! were only birthed from the belief system that there WAS NOT A FENCE that is sufficient preventative of slug infestation...

So, my question is... (Obvious) where/how in the **** do I get/make/find/purchase such a fence!

You could make a slug trap by leaving a little beer in some empty beer cans. Slugs love beer, but it's kinda sad cuz they climb in, party, and die :frown:.

I just tried sluggo around my shiitakes. So far, so good.

I heard slugs can't stand copper and that by putting some copper piping arround the perimiter of your bed you could keep slugs out, though it is aparently pretty expensive.

I think that they may be limited in their ability to make a 360deg corner while upside down. Suggesting that you may be able to install a guard around the edge that would keep them from being able to climb into the bed.

I have no idea how effective these methods are. Your idea sounds just as good... :shrug:

I have heard that slugs will not cross a line of eggshell bits or human hair.  I had also heard about copper (toxic to invertebrates) and zinc.

I cannot attest to the effectiveness from experience, but if anyone knows about slugs it should be folks here.

Look up Banana slug to see some of what we got. 

I've found them sixteen inches long climbing a tree to get to oyster mushrooms.  I'll bet they can taste the mycelium at the base of the tree because the "eyes" they havewould be no good for seeing them, and what tree the oysters were up.  None of them were climbing the wrong tree.

Gross but kinda interesting still.

Not so fast there flash... This site also said that you couldn't/shouldn't use "Toxic" chemicals and whatnot near your patch b/c it would "Get into" the mushrooms...:shrug:

It said "Build" a "Fence" so...? :confused2:

but about the sluggo,... How are you gonna know? (if its made its way in the patch) ...what I'm saying is, if its not safe enough to drink right out of the container, you shouldn't put it anywhere near your patch!! :commonsense:

Hi FellowGrower,

Some years ago I watched a movie about outdoor cultivation of Stropharia and a guy made an electric fence with two bare copper wires running in parallel and separated about 5 mm between them. These copper wires were connected to a 9 volt battery. The wires were nailed to wooden beams surrounding the area of cultivation.

I have frequently heard that diatomaceous earth works well, but haven't tried an outdoor patch yet so I can't speak from personal experience.

I bet you could do that with the copper tape, just make 2 rings around the bed about a 1/4 in apart and hook one ring up to the pos, other to the neg.

I read that diatomaceous earth was effective, too.  I tried it.  It didn't work too well.

Copper tape seems to be the solution if you're looking to build a fence, but it could get expensive, and slugs may already be in your beds.  I would say that making traps is probably your best bet.

I have an outoor project that's ready to fruit, so I'll be giving beer traps a shot.  Slugs really seem to love oyster mushrooms...

Diatomaceous earth may work for tiny slugs, but I bet it is not effective against big ones.  IT is very effective against cockroaches, on a side note. A thorough inundation of a premises gets it into every nook and cranny, and cockroach-proofs a building forever.  It takes three or four days to kill them. The dust, if you breathe it, may cause silicosis but it is otherwise non toxic to animals and people.

If you used a copper wire and a zinc galvanized wire, you would be doing the science fair battery experiment. Instead of the traditional lemon, a nice moist slug would complete the circuit, and would, breifly serve as the electrolyte of the battery.

Sometimes I can't help but take things to ridiculous excess.:smile:

I did not know copper tape but I think it is easier to install than copper wires.

Well, I wouldn't chow down on a big chunk of horse poo either.
My jar of Sluggo has a sticker that says "OMRI listed"
From the Sluggo fact sheet: "Sluggo is not at all toxic to animals. Sluggo can be used around pets, children, and wildlife without adverse effects. It also remains effective after rainfall or irrigation. In fact, Sluggo can be used in vegetable gardens at all times, right up to the moment of harvest!"
But beware of Zinc. That is toxic.

:confused2: hmmm... seems pretty straight forward... how exactly did they connect the 2 wires to the 9 volt? and just to be sure, you're saying were nailed to wooden beams at ground level right?

D-Earth, kinda worked? for me? I guess, but... its expensive, and cumbersome to have to "Re-apply" after every rain... I need something that can do the damn thing without any "Maintinence"

Ive got some 1/4in copper tubing, you think I could "Nigger-rig" (for lack of a better phrase):smirk:... it up to make it get current from the battery?

Slugs die when you pour salt on them.

Buy a bunch of rock salt (50lb bag meant for melting ice, or get a 50lb bag of water softener salts = cheapcheapcheap) and use it to make a big ring around the area where your mushrooms are growing - what you want is more like a mote made of salt, rather than a fence :smile:
