Re: Build a SLUG FENCE?? [Re: Horticulture]

OK, the Woo-Woo explanation for the Etheric Minded.

Snails and slugs  navigate via  the earths gravity waves or grid. Ley lines in the Dowsers world. Gravity is magnetic in essence and produces micro currents in copper.  Gastropods  are sensitive to this current and will not cross the line, so to speak.

Most convenient fence I’ve found is a length of soft copper tubing sold in hardware stores for water hookup to refrigerator ice makers, water fountains and such. Works easily and lasts for years.

I guess poisoning is not a compelling reason to turn away for the "etheric minded".  And their magnets stick to copper. How nice for them.  Why not put a big magnet next to your mushrooms to "blind" the slugs then ?

Sorry about the sarcasm but WOO WOO explanations for straightforward phenomena are very annoying to me.

Most invertebrates have copper-based blood, and copper salts are toxic to them. Depending on soil chemistry, copper may also set up an electrical current with other metal ions in the soil.  The slugs may also not favour electrocution while being poisoned.

Funny how they are.

Slugs die when you pour salt on them.

Buy a bunch of rock salt (50lb bag meant for melting ice, or get a 50lb bag of water softener salts = cheapcheapcheap) and use it to make a big ring around the area where your mushrooms are growing - what you want is more like a mote made of salt, rather than a fence

 bad move, salt damages the soil (says RR)

BUt Thanks for that pic, wbastz, that helped alot!

SO i put one end on the positive or both around the positive/negative?
how does "CUrrent" work?

I bet electrocuting them is highly unnecessary. Just thought I'd add, the cooper by itself will likely work.

Fellowgrower, I'm not sure how sensitive you are about toxicity, so you should know, I think copper is poisonous to humans too.

it shouldn't be put in the grow anyway.

It is very simple. There are two closed loops of cooper wires electrically separated between them. One circuit is connected to the positive pole of the battery and the other is connected to the negative pole (or vice versa). Just do not let the two wires touch each other or the battery will discharge too quickly.

Wilson

Woo-Woo is in the navigation, not the micro currents of copper, regardless of soil chemistry, which has merits, or copper salts, which are not necessary for the fence to work.

Otherwise "Excuuuuussseee Meeee".

All the Best.
