Extreme Marksmanship.
    #11026393 -

Anyone in here an avid Marksman? Ive been shooting for most of my life, pretty much since i was able to hold a rifle, and the extreme accuracy side of this is beyond intriguing to me. Ive recently began plans to build my own rifle from individual parts aquired from top name companys around the world. I was just curious if anyone else on here is into this?

you should try to make an absurdly efficient rifle.  efficient, simple, and light.  no need to over do it on power, if you're just going for accuracy, imo.

think "zombie apocalypse".

and no, i have absolutely no experience with firearms.  but i like fantasizing about the zombie apocalypse quite often, so that should count for something, right?

I thought i was the only one...lol. But seriously that is just the senario i love to envision with this rifle.

well whenever you complete this project, make sure to make a new thread about it.  i'd be interested in it.  the daydreams really do take up far too much of my mental energy, so believe me when i say i'd be love to see the final product.  i've probably had about half a dozen actual dreams about zombies that i can remember.  and i've read WWZ at least as many times, if not more.

i wonder if there would be any way for you to affix a suppressor of sorts, to keep the noise down, without hindering accuracy.

yes, those are necessary attributes.  Light, efficient, accurate, simple (for repairs on the go), common caliber, and able to be suppressed at least a bit.

I plan on using a custom made McMillian Glassbedded stock...shown here.
and the Remington 700 .308 caliber action, show here.
coupled with this
and this,

I think that should make for one helluva rifle. Tho im still undecided on the barrel.

how much does the stock weigh?  and what's that material?

1. What materials is a stock made of?
Each fiberglass stock is made of multi-layers of eight-ounce woven fiberglass cloth, laminated under pressure with epoxy resin. The stock is filled with solid fiberglass in the receiver area and epoxy and glass beads in the forend. Our EDGE ultralight stocks are made with 100% graphite cloth instead of fiberglass, for less weight and greater strength.

and for some odd reason they dont have the weight listed, ill have to dig a lil for that.

Water bottles can be used to suppress noise!

you re-sight for the suppressor, no loss in accuracy

at what range will you be shooting at? Sometimes its an overkill, my AR-10 can reach out and hit gongs at over 700 yards all day

my optimum range for this is est. between 800-1000 the latter probably being far beyond my ability as of now.

the weight of the finished rifle with a scope and a 26" stainless barrel will be between 14-16lbs

that was the question i wanted to ask you, reguarding the barrel. I dunno how in depth your knowledge is, but do you have any suggestions as far as selection goes?

Okay guys.. what can you shoot reliably at what range with which rifle & shooting stance?

Regrettably having BB & AS experience only.. what can be done with an actual rifle? At what ranges can you reliably bag a deersized & rabbitsized target? Not the one in a million shot but the shot you could make to put food on your table?

(yeah I know a 30-06 would turn a rabbit inside out but you know what I mean)

.227 is good for rabbits i believe, out to mabey 100 yards depending on the model, mabey even further.

As for deer i stand by my .30-30. Seeing an 8 pt fall over dead with no reaction kinda drilled that into me.

True. What you loose is ballistic potential (penetration ability, velocity, and accuracy at a distance.)
The amount of change to your sight will also be larger to account for slower bullet speed. Longer shots will drop way more, and wind or a change in bullet will have a larger effect. All that in short = a shorter range of accuracy (kill potential.)

there's so many options that it's impossible to say conclusively that
one will be better than another for you, you mentioned you wanted to
shoot 800+ yards, for that I recommend a 24-26" barrel in stainless, I
prefer a non-fluted barrel that's been parkerized to remove glare

essentially the configuration you're putting together is much like a
Robar SR-90 made by Robbie Barkman, something to really consider is the
optics, often times it will run more for a good scope than a good rifle

$2500 isnt that uncommon for the best optics, you can find really good
products in the $400-$600 range as well, when selecting a scope pay
close attention to the reticle, some are great for distance shooting,
some are a huge hindrance, the mil dot and mil plex as well as a few of
the varmint and tactical scopes can help you gauge distance

over 800yds with a .308 you can have as much as a 4yd drop on the
bullet, calculating windage at that distance is tricky as fuck because
you can have wind going in several directions over that distance, it's
certainly a practice issue there, take notes with each shot, lots and
lots of notes

one of the reasons I selected the place was defensibility, Zombies, pissed off rabbits, you just never know what's gonna happen
