Anyone know how to lay bathroom tile?
    #3804889 - 02/19/05 11:34 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Is it very difficult? I'd like to tile my bathroom. I think I may be able to handle it...

I just finished tiling both of my bathrooms. It's
not to hard. Lowes.com has detailed instuctions and
even animations showing how to do it. The worst part
is cutting them. If you don't have a lot to cut lowes
will cut them for you, I'm sure home depot would do the
same. I got the tile for one bathroom for free so I had
to cut them myself. I put marble in the other bathroom
and if I wouldn't have bought them at lowes I woulda
wasted a shitload of money 'cause they break very easy.
The guy at lowes broke around $100 in tiles cutting mine.
I would have shit myself if I broke them. I accidentally
broke one and didn't eat lunch that day to make up for it.
If you want any advice I'd be more than happy to help,
just pm me.

Lupuz

It's not to bad. If you're not cussing when you sponge the grout you're not doing it right.

I just ripped out all the nasty ass old flooring out of my bathroom, looks like I'm commited now.

I think that I should lay some subflooring down first, any suggestions on thickness? Is it acceptable to go with self adhesive viynl tile? Or will it not last as long/ look as nice. I like that idea because I won't have to mess with the grout, and I can cut the tile to size to fit around the toilet and pipes..

Thanks.

Make sure you have something soft to kneel on, otherwise your knees will be killing you for days. As Lupuz said, expect to curse a lot.  :goodluck:

Oy! Yeah, 3/4 (pref. treated) plywood witha 1/4" subfloor, imo, that's the easy part.
The website should have more on this too, but you gotta glue the subfloor and fill and sand for a good flooring surface.
GL

PS: try not to cuss too much, in this kind of work, a little extra attention and patience will go a loooooong way

I found my answer:

Floors requiring underlayment ? If removal of the old floor is too difficult or impractical and the floor is too damaged to use an embossing leveler, cover it with new layer of plywood underlayment. Unless otherwise directed by code, 1/4" BC plywood makes a good underlayment.

Darkstar- I know what you mean bro. Luckily it's a small bathroom, and I'm going to try and find self-adhesive vinyl tile.

yeah, that was a bad idea ripping shit up... you can do it, but it probably will crack and won't be a good job. good luck though.

Jono- I had to rip up the existing carpet/cracked vinyl. It was horrible, and there was no other option. Now, the original wood floor is exposed, and I'm gonna nail down a 1/4" subfloor then get some self-adhesive tile.

a self leveling underlayment is what they are refering to, in a bathroom if you dont want to worry about the floor rotting out again you'll need one, Scofield
and Ardex are two that I've used, they have a higer burst strength than concrete
and they dont shrink when they dry... there are several threads in OTD you can search for, afoaf and you_suck were the starters of the threads.

if you need more info, I'll be happy to help you out
