I never added anything.  I think coffee increases contamination rate.  Just an opinion though.  I wouldn't bother unless you are really doing things right.

It goes around that hpoo is ideal for mushrooms and that may be true given that mushrooms have evolved around using shit for breakfast and not coir, but scientifically they are very similar and practically they produce similar results.  Coir is MUCH easier to use for the newbie and said newbie isn't going to be able to hit the sweet spot with either substrate anyway.

In my experience coffee increases contam rates when used with coir or grain in jars.  It makes sense to me.  Coffee grows mold in the coffee maker EVERY time I leave it in there for a week.  I have NEVER seen mold on coir EVER.

very true, so your not too worried about the nitrogen content then? And I was going to use the coffee grinds, in the pasteurization process with the coir, not using it to help colonization in the jars. When you did yours, did it contam after u pasteurized it with the coir? Wondering if I should just do straight Coir and WBS.

one quart of gypsum is a lil much...

sure you could do straight coir but it helps add qt coffe qt verm and 10%(cup or so) gypsum hell even throw in a qt of castings

just make sure to throw in 1 gal water for right moisture content and pasturize properly: big bucket boiling/hot water temp around 160 overnight

Coir's performance is stunning.  Straight, unsterilized, unpasteurized coir smokes anything.  I wouldn't piss around with coffee for the same reasons stated above--it's contam prone.  Additionally, I wouldn't be surprised if coir performs better without any pasteurization (something swim wouldn't ever bother with).  Apparently, coir is packed with a relatively invisible mold that fights off just about any competitors except, it would seem, psilocybe.  It's a mold in the same family of trich and actually smells like trich.  Coir never contaminates, and yet mycelium just devours it, it's amazing stuff.

To the OP question
Quote:
and do you have to case a coir sub

The answer is no. That goes for any cub substrate
I always case my trays/tubs with a 50/50+ but that's just me.

Could I get confirmation of using straight unpasteurized coir with success from a TC? Apparently so far my understanding of coir is you colonize a bag or jar and then after full colonization you fruit the bag or jar substrate in a tray with coir...is this correct? I'm hearing conflicting things on casing

You inoculate A substrate what ever one you want its your choice. BRF/RYE/WBS so on and so forth.
Then when that is %100 colonized you then can mix that with coir/Hpoo/Cpoo so on and so forth to create more substrate.
When that is %100 percent colonized you can either case it or birth it.

I've been reading up on straight coir and it seems great because I won't need a pressure cooker...what are the advantages and disadvantages between casing and birthing for coir? I found a tek and casing is used, but the problem for that is the lack of a PC and inability to get one anytime soon. Thanks!

Casing with coir is an outdated method...  Vets on this board always used to get tangled up in their panties when they heard someone using coir as bulk, exclaiming it was non-nutritive, only to be used as a casing.  Hah!  Sure it's a great way to case, but it's just like casing with manure.  So you might as will just go all the way and use it as bulk.  Only real disadvantage is price, but only in comparison to other bulks, which are free or close to free.  Stuff is still cheap as balls...
