is it true the old incondescent bulbs r softer light than the CFLs

what is softer light?  Incandescents are more yellow, I prefer the CFLs.

Yea, I hear that alot too.  I guess they like them since they were raised with them.  I switched to CFLs cause I dont like the heat from an incandescent bearing down on me.

Tungsten bulbs emit a great deal of red light and much less green and blue, while incandescent sources have clear peaks in the blues and greens. However, there are incandescent lights these days that emit a 'warmer' light.

Personally, I think the main problem with incandescent sources is not so much their color spectrum (although they are unfit for some purposes; e.g. food display/photography), but the refresh rate. Many flicker at the usual 50(Eu)/60(US) Hz frequency. Although not directly visible, this tires some peoples' eyes. There are fixtures that 'switch' the light at much higher frequencies (kHz range), which creates an overall much 'smoother' light.

I can't stand incandescent light bulbs. I prefer lights with a better color spectrum like CFLs.

Old CFL's had a really cold (actually hot) light to them, and many cheapo CFL's still do.

If you are prepared to pay though the next generation CFL's are just sweet and better than any Edison bulb ever was.

Example, I have CFL's that are about the size of golfballs, plus the fitting added to that. They have no exposed tubes, threres a bulb around them. The bulb is polyurethane sealed so if you drop them, no shards and no spills.

Now get this.. Edison bulbs last 1.000 hours. Regular CFL's last 3.000-5.000 hours. Mine last 15.000 hours. Guaranteed. Should they cease functioning before that send em back to the manufacturer and if its within the warranty with no signs of molest you get a free replacement lamp of the same model.

The light color is a pleasant warm white, and lots of it.

The bulb in question will save me about 125 euros (almost 200 dollars) in electricity during its service life and get this: if it breaks before that even longer as I get a free replacement bulb.

To top it off: this bulb costs as much money to buy as the 15 good quality incandescent bulbs it replaces.

Can you say, wow?

With the new generation CFL's there really is no reason whatsoever to cling onto edison bulbs, for your lights that tend to burn a good duration of time. For the loo I use an edison bulb for instant light of short duration.

In a few years when my current bulbs expire they have saved me about 2000 dollars in electricity - with warranty and cool features and this for the purchase cost of the incandescents they replace.

Calculate how many gallons of gas you can buy for $2000 - thats how much carbon emissions are reduced in the lighting of my home.

Everybody wins. If Edison had lived today, he would've bought CFL's :smile:

Perhaps a dumb question/comment.

Can't you just add some sort of shade to change the color and amke the light appear "warmer"?

can see it in fluros but not in incandescents, it gives me a headache
