Small Chants?
    #10986558 -

I found these growing on dead wood and in moss.  They are much smaller than the chanterelles I have found nearby.  They are a brighter orange color, have hollow stems, some have a hole in the middle of the cap, and the gills do not descend very far down the stem.  Because of the small size and the fact that the gills fork made me think they weren't jack-o-lanterns.  Possibly Craterellus ignicolor?

i think Craterellus is still a bit tricky/muddled, and genetic analysis is currently being used to find true relationships.

i have little knowledge of them though, so take my word with the proverbial salt chaser.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Craterellus ignicolor, keep looking around that area, you may find some black trumpets.

Thanks warrior.  Is it common to find black trumpets around C. ignicolor?  I have been looking for black trumpets but have yet to find any.

According to my field guide, C. ignicolor may or may not be edible?  Has anyone ever tried to eat any?

Its edible, start with a small amount the first time..

The black trumpets will be found in the same type of habitat.

i found something similar over the week-end growing a few inches from the base of a large oak tree, solid stem though, did not try to eat them.

I ate a few a while back. They cook down to nothing, so you should probably snag a few more

It's a good thing that you didn't eat them. It would have ruined your day. Your mushroom is a poisonous lookalike and not a chantrelle. It's called Omphalatus olearius, the common name is Jack-o-lantern.
