Chants and ID requests
    #5869475 - 07/17/06 04:29 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I went out for a mushroom hunt today; the bank clock said it was 98degrees F
Chants first

These ones were maybe a little young, but there's a bunch of pins and smaller ones behind.

Bolete I'm going to try to eat

Stinkhorns

now for the ID's
They were all in chant habitat, except one which I'll explain about.

#1 had a yellow(same color as chants) hollow stem. The cap was the color of most of the black trumpets I find and is shaped like a chant, with gills underneath, can't quite remember anything specific about the gills tho, I think they forked at the end, but might have been "true" gills.

pic of them next to  chanterelles

The next two are in the same pics, and was hard to smell anything except chants or they had the same smell    :stoned:
ID#2 has a more peach colored cap that looks just like a chants, and has hanging tubes/teeth for gills. Has a whitish stem that isn't hollow.

ID#3 the cap and stem color was almost fluorescent orange, like the color of a tangelo, with whitish spots and flesh underneath where scratched. The gills were folds like Black Trumpets and very few of them, way fewer than the folds a golden chant has like maybe 10 underneath the whole cap. I should also note these were shorter, and were almost fully covered with debris(leaves pine needles etc). Here's a pic of just them next to chants.

Here's some pics of the two ID's(ID#2&ID#3) on both sides of a chanterelle. The toothed one(ID#2) is on the left in this first pic. And the shorter more orange colored(ID#3) is on the right.

This next ID should be fairly easy, as they look in appearance, besides the color, just like black trumpets. The underside looks like veins running all up it. I forgot to smell these. They were in the same area as the chanterelles, except I noticed a lot more sticks and wood where these cups were hanging out.

The rest of these are just random pics I took.
These were HUGE

Okay Mead, I believe ID#1 is a Trumpet Chanterelle (Cantharellus tubaeformis)

#1 could be a False Chanterelle. As with anything you plan to eat, if in doubt, throw it out. That's the only really good easy rule there is about picking and eating wild mushrooms.

If #2 actually has teeth hanging down under the cap (I can't see them in the photos) then they are Hydnum repandum, a choice edible. Young specimens will have relatively tiny teeth. This mushroom could easily be mistaken for a Chanterelle from above while walking through the woods. Compared to a Chanterelle they have brittle flesh.

#3 sounds like a Smooth Chanterelle, a close relative that has a nearly smooth underside to the cap. They are just as edible as regular Chanterelles.

The next ones are Gomphus floccosus, which is strongly not recommended for eating. Although there are some people who eat them, lots of people who try them end up with an upset stomach (meaning nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea). They make for great photos, though.

The big ones (with the dollar bill) are Amanitas, and they look close to A. caesarea. If you pick them, be sure to dig up the entire base of the stem so you get the volva. Although they are edible, as Amanitas they should be avoided until you can be absolutely certain exactly which one they are.

Then you've got some nice green Russulas (as far as I know all the green species are edible), although an ID to species requires a microscope.

The boletes look interesting.

Great looking area and photographs. Enjoy your edibles.

Happy mushrooming!

Well looks like ToxicMan covered everything.

You're so lucky to live in such a prime hunting area.  The photos and descriptions were great, as usual.  Those green Russulas are neat looking- not too many green mushrooms.
That Bolete looks perfect, I hope you got to it before the flies!

awww, I like the turtle!

I haven't found a bug in my chants yet, but it was muggy as all hell

Thanks curecat, there was no larvae that I seen in that bolete, looked nice and clean so I gave it a try.

I'd appreciate any info on trying to sell these, as I never have before, and I left probably 100 that I seen behind, and was only there for 30-45 minutes, so I know there is more than that too; plus the chants have only just started in my area so I only have really hunted 2 spots for them.

Last picture, im gonna go ahead take a stab at the id. I say eastern box turtle, Terrapene carolina. Not exactley a choice edible though not poisonous at the same time. Personally I prefer to leave this one in peace for future generations :P

I don't remember if they are hollow, the stems are usually thinner than
chanterelles, some pics, the color and shape is close to chanterelles, I find them under pine trees.

The ones I have in question are found under pine trees, and look almost exactly like chants, but are hollow and have a very distinct smell... They taste like nothing... all texture no taste...

Sounds like some kind of "waxy cap", hygrophorus or hygrocybe, some of them look like chanterelles and some are very brightly colored.
