First bulk grow (need advice)
    #10967118 -

Hello helpful friends :]

I'm in my third flush with cakes, and i have so far a little under an ounce dried of nice cubes.

I'm VERY happy with how my first grow turned out, and i can easily say this will be a long-lasting hobby. The problem is, i want to start growing in ounces (needless to say my ounce is gone now lol)

I want to bulk grow, and im willing to do anything to start my craft off right. I'm a bit strapped for cash, but i can put about 100 bucks into this (i have a big pressure cooker from my cakes tho and a glovebox)

The thing is, i spent alot of time researching BRF teks and trying my best to keep everything in check, and that was easy and fun, but im having a problem finding ANY good reading about bulk growing. Everything i find already assumes i know how to bulk grow, and uses acronym's and slang that admittedly goes over my head.

Im not asking for handout information, and i dont want to skip corners, but can someone help me understand bulk growing?
What ive got sofar was that i...

Colonize wild bird seed in 1 pint jars, then lay it over top 4 inches of manure?

I need help :[

I personally like coir, coffee, verm for a bulk substrate. With gypsum. Poo is popular too, with straw or other materials.
You'll either mix it with the spawn, or use it in layers, to a depth of four inches.

I went from jars to horse poo bags.  Never looked back.  What kind of space do you have?  Are you trying to get a greenhouse going or maybe just a monotub?

Well i live in a larger apartment, so i have space to do whatever id like, but i dont have a greenhouse setup. I was thinking i would like to use tubs if i could.

I would like to use alternatives to poo, so id like Doc_T to explain that coir, coffee, verm mixture.

I dont understand the steps, and someone talking me through it would be very appreciated, but if you guys can point me in the right direction that would be sweet.

I mean, do i lay down the mixture underneath wildbirdseed spawn? and if i used tubs, perlite is out of the question right? i need to buy a humidifier?

thanks

You're doing this backwards, I think. Search around for some grows you like, then see what methods they used.
Here's one of mine to get you started: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10713572#10713572

i will try to explain this as simple and as best i can first decide what you are going to start your grow on rye bird seed ect. and search for some teks pic one and stick to it. next step u already chose what you will spawn to(when you use colonized jars to colonize a bulk sub) u chose a coir mix witch is very popular and like doc i love it. its all i use coir coffe and vermic. now search for a pasturize tek. i like to just mix everything dump boiling water in a bucket and cover it till it cools.now check out mono tub teks(this is known as the set it and forget it tek) learn about the way then work and study the way to set it up.if you see something or read something you dont understand do a search on it the question has probley been talked about and awnsered at least ten times every few month. all i do is spawn rye grain to coir mix in monotubs the results are usually huge. if ude like pm me n ide be more then happy to walk you through the steps. ps there are no set quantities or sizes for anything you do just recomended and everyone usually does something slightly different then the next that being said good luck on your grow

Thank all of you guys for the support.

Honestly, a part of me was expecting to be pushed aside on this one, but you guys have given me alot of help. Doc_T, i've got similar mini-tubs as you for my cake shotgun FC's (with a bunch of 1/4th inch holes drilled in the sides), but i think i want to try the  bigger tub out. Thank you greg, funny, and lostkeys for the help and links, so let me see if i sort of have this down (paraphrasing) and you guys can help me fill in the holes. Hopefully, ill catch on and i wont need to PM someone desperately begging for help :]

1 : Rinse wild birdseed, fill jars 3/4 full with seed, 1/2 full with water. Pressure cook for over an hour, let cool overnight. Inoc in glovebox, Set jars aside for colonization.

2 : Mix equal parts Coir - Coffee grinds - Vermiculite with boiling water, mix for a little then pour mixture into bucket and let cool overnight.

3 : Line tub with garbage bag, fill 4 inches with coir mix, then poor 2 inches of spawn ontop. Cover with blanket and wait for colonization.

4 : Pluck 'em, Dry 'em, Eat 'em. :]

=questions=

1 : Where does Gypsum come into all of this? I'm definitely going to use Coir-coffee-verm-gypsum rather than c-c-v or poo.

2 : Can the coffee be just grinds out of a fresh container? Or do i have to use spent coffee?

3 : How do the tubs stay humid? I don't mind spraying every day, but should i buy a humidifier?

4 : How much coir should i buy for 2 mono tubs? How deep should the coir mix be in the tub, and how deep should the spawn be on top of that?

5 : (This ones mainly for Doc T) I really liked your oak ridge shroom pics. Those were beautiful and huge! Could you recomend a site where i can buy those spores? Im actually having trouble finding a shroom i want to grow right now, because i want something more hallucinagenic than normal cubensis b.
Any spore suggestions? I was thinking i would try out two different kinds.

Thanks for reading and for support. Although i didnt with my cakes, when i get my bulk setup running ill have pics and a log posted. i DO have some pics of my FC's but its not that interesting, my biggest shroom was only about 5 1/2".

If you're gonna prepare your grain that way, it might take u a few attempts to get just the right amount of water. Might be simpler to prepare it first, then pc it.

anonjon can you clarify what you mean?

and schonda are you trying bulk mushrooms for your first grow? I dont want to sound like some wannabe veteran but maybe you should start with the RR videos PF Tek.

With grains it's important to get the moisture content just right. So if you're trying to pressure cook the water into the grains, you're going to need to be fairly accurate with your measurements. You might not nail it on the first try.

I learned from the RR video under grain prep and it was pretty simple. Rinse thoroughly, soak overnight, boil 10 minutes, allow it to drain while hot and steamy. Then load it into your jars and pressure cook. Hard to get the moisture content wrong like this.

Both ways work fine. I like the 2nd cuz I know it's got the right moisure content when it goes in the pc.

1. sorry ive never read up on the need for gypsum in bulk sub so i have no idea whatsoever

2.no you shouldnt put coffee grinds in without it being used first or just rinsed somehow with hot water should have refered to as spent coffee. this takes the acidity out of the grinds witch you dont want. the grinds are used for their high nitrogen levels. you can go to a coffee shop and ask for their spent coffee just tell them its good for your garden(witch it is)

3.the tubs stay humid on their own because the water in the sub will evaporate with no where to go but in the air and the sides of the tub then back down into the sub and the cycle starts again....and agian. some people do fan and mist quite a few times per day after the sub is fully colonized. personaly i fan real good once in the mornning and once at night after the sub is fully colonized(it is key not to open untill fully colozied) and i usualy dont mist unless there are no water droplets on the walls or the sub is looking dry. on the same note while ur sub is colonizing in the tub make sure the holes are taped shut or covered with plastic or something, then when its ready stuff them with polyfil.and on a follow up note if you leave the holes unstuffed after colonization you will without a doubt have to mist constintly because the polyfil also plays a role in the humidity being high. alowes air in but not to much water out. but like i said its all prefrence.

3.first ask yourself how big do you want to go? and how risky are you? then go by something like for every 1 quart of spwn use 2-3 quarts of sub.(the more spawn to bulk ratio used the less of a chance for a contam and the faster the sub colonizes) for example i will mix one brick of coir 1-2 quarts of coffe and 1 quart vermic witch is spawned to by 5-6 quarts of spawn. i like to layer my tubs with 1 1/2-2in sub mix all of my spawn on top then a slightly thinner layer of sub on top of that. i usualy have some left over witch ys goes in the garden and the sub is colonized and ready to fruit in 10-12 days. o yea these are 30gal tubs with four holes 2in wide on both sides.

4. i know this was for the doc but my friends tell me the koh samui(witch was what i tried) strain and pesa i grow where the best for visuals but ive read porto ricans are one of the most intence. also heard and experiance that it is hit or miss when using a ms syring(multi spore) to inject jars. after you get this down something to look into is making prints and lc syrings(liquid cultivation). saves money time and you get to basicly pick the best of the best shrooms and make an arm out of them. but get this down worry about it later.(just about to start my first prints and lc in a few days)

by the way I get on tangents and start rantting if you havnt noticed sorry.
see forgot...like said above have heard it  is tough to get water content right prepairing like that. may seem easy and less steps but might take a while to get it right. always rathere have gain to dry then to wet. if its to wet growth will be very slow.

As far as prepping grain goes, it can be tricky.  I've tried the method of prepping in jar, and have found that the grain doesn't colonize as well... If this is the route you're bound and determined to take, the correct measurements for quart jars is 300ml of dry birdseed and 150ml of water per jar.

I've found that soaking the grains for 24 hours, then simmering for 5 or 10 minutes works much better, even though it is more time consuming.  The most important thing is getting the moisture content right before loading your jars.  You want the grains to pass the spoon test for sure.  Scoop up a spoonful of grains, then tip the spoon as if you're dumping them out.  As long as little to no grains stick to the spoon, you're at the correct moisture content, assuming you've soaked and simmered them.

Getting the excess moisture off is much easier if you simmer prior to draining, as a lot of the water will evaporate off due to the heat.

As for preparing your bulk sub, pick a tek and follow it to a tee... that's what I did with Large Dose's teks and so far things have gone off without a hitch.  The only thing I did extra was to add 1 cup of gypsum to the mixture during the pasteurization process.

His ratio is 1 brick of coir, 1 quart of spent coffee, and 1 quart of vermiculite added to 6 quarts of grain spawn.  This is convenient as it is the perfect amount of substrate for 1 18 gallon (68 quart) tub.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll gladly offer my opinions.

Thank you both for the heartfelt replies (and thanks for going on a tangent greg)

Greg, you said 1 qt. spawn to every 2-3 qts substrate, but it seems Lostkeys ratio is the opposite (2:1 Spawn - Substrate). Should i have more sub. or spawn?

Also, i definitely agree with you on the need to get good with printing and making LC, but im gunna hold off till after my first bulk grow.

Q : Do you guys think two monotubs will give me 16 dry ounces?
Q : Online there is 10 bricks of Coir for 30 dollars, is that a good deal? Coir (this is stupid) doesnt go bad right?

Also, i was under the misconception that you had to pressure cook the water into the seeds. It seems like cooking it in before PC'ing it is alot better, so ill definitely go with that. Can you guys explain how to do that a little more?

one last Question, Its just about the end of summer season, and by the time i get things going (seeing shrooms poke up that is) it might be october, my house isnt going to be heated to 75-80 degrees, so should i buy a space heater for the tubs?

Also, when im mixing the Coir into the water, with the other things, i dont drain the water before putting it into a bucket to cool right? Just 1 gallon of water, 1 brick of coir, and the rest?

thanks! sorry for the ongoing questions.

more spawn just makes it colonize faster i use any were from 1-1 1-3 both work.3oz dry but as you see small tub. but it was also an isolate which helps. with a MS syringe it is a crap shoot. why do you need a pound.

boil seed for 10 min till 5% open
or
simmer 30-40 min till 5% open up to you

i use my garage as a grow room temps are 75-60 in October and not a problem, but some stains might not do well.

Either do a monotub, or you can do some bulk trays and use your shotgun FC.

In my signature, you could use the WBS tek and Roadkill poo tek to do bulk trays.  Bulk trays are easy and pretty fun to play with.  Almost everything you need to know is in those two teks.  Very easy...

There's a monotub tek as well, if you'd want to try that.

Also, if you want to do grains, learn how to G2G and you'll be more self sufficient.  http://www.shroomery.org/5207/What-is-G2G-and-how-is-it-done

You want either equal parts spawn/bulk sub or more bulk sub, 1:3 is often recommended. 1:1 or 1:2 will colonize faster and be less prone to contamination. Try searching on 'spawn ratio'.

A pound from 2 tubs in 1 flush is not realistic. goto search our forums and try searching 'monotub yield'.

Try searching 'grain preparation' or goto roger rabbit's videos and click on grain preparation. Most important part is to rinse thoroughly in the beginning and drain thoroughly at the end. 10 minute boil is almost overkill btw. And grain splitting is not the big deal people make it out to be.

Try searching 'incubator aquarium heater tek'. It's a real common way to keep a heated incubator using a fish tank heater.

Peace.

When you put coir in water, 1 brick will expand out to 7 or 8 quarts  Add 1 quart coffee, and 1 quart verm, and you'll have a total of 10 quarts of bulk substrate to spawn you 6 quarts of colonized grain to.  this is a ratio of roughly 1:2 spawn:bulk as your quart jars of spawn won't be packed to the brim with colonized grain.

1 lb dry is very unrealistic, it'll probably be closer to a couple of dry ounces per tub, per flush.  Just be happy if you manage to grow ANY mushrooms on your first attempt.

10 Bricks for 30 bucks seems like a good deal to me, and no coir does not go bad so long as it's kept dry.

No, you do not drain the water after pasteurizing it using Large Dose's tek, as he's pretty much got the moisture content down pat.  You'll see... when you mix it up it's pretty much at field capacity by the time you're ready to put it in the buckets.
