I'm sure that we now force flowering for a longer period in order to get
that extra potency and while genetics does play a role, I dont believe
it's as significant as people would like to believe, do you think you'd
notice a 5% increase in potency

I wasn't talking about OVERALL quality. There is good and shitty weed now, as there was back then. I think there was high range and low range weed back then, but higher and lower range now, averaging about the same.

Was the best weed one could get in the 70s as good as the best weed one could get today?

Regardless, I posted data on potency increasing between 85 and 98, going from 7.8 to 12%, a factor of about 50%.

If you are talking about the amount of THC going from 2% to 7% then yea, I'm sure you would notice that change

Actually it's brought to you by:

University of Mississippi Potency Monitoring Project

The same source cited in drugwardistortions.com  Which is to say, the definitive source.

Pot has gotten stronger.  LSD has gotten weaker.

Yeah, I think you're missing the point where the graph is from the Univ. of Mississippi study, the same one Doc_T posted.

It's just a graphical representation of the same numbers.

The White House using the same data is nothing to panic about.

End the arguement right now with this:

Weed: Definately much stronger, numerous legit sources will say so, its not hard to find a good link. Advances in growing and breeding have made weed like 5x more potent.

LSD: Less potent. It used to be legal back then, it was made in a professional lab and people made their tabs a lot stronger. A tab from back then would blow your fucking mind.

Mesc: It comes from the same fucking plant as it did back in the day, with the same basic extraction. No major change.

Coke: Same as Mesc, it has more to do with purity. Pure coke then is the same as pure coke now.

shitty weed back in teh 70's and 80's was still better than what I see
today out of the commercial shit, maybe this whole 'potency increase' is
because of the quantity of high grade weed being grown, when you compate
30million tons of 60's weed to 30 million tons of 2000+ weed sure you'll
see an increase in potency due to the fact that there's more home
growers putting out quality bud today... there's a hundred ways these
figures can be read but where are the actual studies

isnt that exactly the question being posed in this thread doesnt that
also apply to the shitty weed, is todays schwagg higher potency than
that from 40 years ago...

end the argument by showing the actual studies denoting where the samples
were taken as well as how the samples were assayed, to cite sources
without the actual studies is simply perpetuating the myth

Ok, I have a National Geographic channel documentary on my tivo right now where they talk about the THC content of good weed back in the day compared to now. They say the dankest shit now is like 20% THC compared to like 5% in the 70s. Just look at pics of weed back then compared to now.

http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/explorer/3821/Overview#tab-Videos/06099_00

Just think about it. Popularity has been steadily increasing over time and we are getting better and better at breeding the plants to have more THC. New grow techniques and better engineers strains = better herb.

see, that's an issue for many reasons, one thing, I've seen sensemilia
then and now, guess what, not much has changed, I've seen schwagg from
then and now, guess what, not much has changed, looks dont really
determine potency

new grow techniques develop more weed, not neccisarily more potent weed,
you cant trust some documentary just as you cant trust some graph, when
the research is following the money it taints the research

well, looks like everythings been covered pretty well :]

all i can add is ive talked and hung out with a few people from the 60's 70's era and from their stories, shwagg (stress) was very easy to get your hands on. probably like the cron/ kush availablity of today. i doubt "kush" was even around back then, and if it was Robert Plant was the lucky bastard smoking it. but yeah due to advancements in cultivating (hydro and what not) good bud is definitely easier to get your hands on now. stress is much less main stream now than it was then.

As a member of the Woodstock Generation, I find none of the weed today to be as potent as good weed back in the day.

I only smoke occasionally and had some $500/oz Woody Kush this last weekend. I got a slight buzz for about five minutes. Repeated tokings did nothing more. Same thing with a homegrown Silver Haze.

Of course, it could just be that the newness wore off decades ago or that my brain has changed.

Acid potency cannot change per se, but concentration was certainly higher per blotter/pill back in the Orange Sunshine days.

No...cultivators breed the most potent plants with each other to produce higher potency offspring. If you have ten plants, you breed the most potent with the second most potent and then do the same with their offspring and the offspring of their offspring, on and on until you have significantly increased potency. Obviously that is a highly simplistic version, but cultivators don't only breed plants for higher yield.

okay so im here having a debated argument with my room mate and his girlfriend, and they are telling me that drugs back then (i.e wood stock) were stronger then what they are today, like Weed, lsd, coke, mesc. etc.  i need out side sources opinions or experiences. its a 2 to 1 argument and i believe that drugs back then were weaker then what they are today based on the little bit of information we knew then as opposed to what we know now.

please help clarify.

Well the question is subjective. Drugs don't just becomes stronger they  are the same molecule then as they are now. So it really depends on how much the producer puts in a dose and how much it get stepped on from dealer to dealer down the line. This does not apply when buying raw plant material, for example weed or psychoactive cacti. This does apply to LSD and the like.

So studies show that marijuana has greatly increased in potency. My memory fails me and the answer differs from source to source but from what I can remember it has become 65 to 75 percent more potent than it was in the 1960's. Thats probably wrong cause I cant remember but whats important is that is has definitely become greatly more potent.

Acid, coke and the like really differ because its not pure LSD crystal its diluted and certain producers put more or less micrograms in a hit. It really depends on who its coming from. I'm sure there are doses less potent and doses more potent that the average of the time. The LSD molecule has not changed since then.

As much as we like to group things together and come up with simple answers, things are just not that simple. Saying drugs are weaker/stronger than they were  50 years ago is to broad of a question. There are a lot of things to take into consideration like region bought from, type of drug your talking about and the fact that they just don't progressively become more or less cut. It can vary meaning average potency of a gram of coke can go up and down with time.

So yes some drugs might be cut more than they were then and some drugs might be cut less(on average, this does not apply to everywhere in the world) but whats important to know is the molecule of the drugs themselves don't change. And yes some drugs that are raw plant material can become stronger through technology but does not apply to all drugs.

That being said, the answer to your question is yes AND no. Some drugs are some drugs aren't, for various reasons.

thats a good answer right there. also, i think although pot's gone up in potency over the years, it doesnt mean ALL pot is more potent. I'm sure they had some great danks that were better than some of today's danks back then. it really depends on the care of the product and who makes it. so, as stated before, the answer is yes and no.

having smoked for more than 30 years myself I have to agree, as I
referenced before, several of us got stoned as hell from a joint of some
home grown back when I was 13, and while many of you guys are saying
'yeah, but you were 13', I'd already been smoking for years at that point

No...cultivators breed the most potent plants with each other to produce higher potency offspring.

and exactly how does a cultivator know what plant is the most potent
unless he happens to do his own at home chromatography, you cant look at
a bud and say 'wow, this shit's purple, it's gotta be way more potent'
'this shits all crystally, it's definitely more potent' especially when
your flowering cycle can be extended by a month to get that added 'potency'

I said bred for desirable traits, and you neglect the whole cross
breeding and cloning issues since many cultivators work from clones
