whats even more confusing is that a US pint is different to a UK pint.

whats also strange is the mixture of different systems. Like when you buy milk over here. Its sold in pints. when you go to buy milk, you buy 1, 2, 4 or 6 pints. Yet we mainly use the metric system.

everything else is generaly metric, though they do tell you that 2 pints is a litre, and that 4 pints is 2 litres on the jug.

pubs sell drink in 1/2 pints and pints.

ive also noticed that temperatures are almost always dealt with in F, but in the UK we use C. Ive been here for so long that i often use F now when refering to temperatur.

this is because F was created for the exclusive purpose of measuring normal weather (in germany where F was created) whereas C was created for scientific purposes, ie pure and not applied science.

So you can use metric for anything but milk, beer, cider, or the weather? I guess that's not too bad.

In the US, everything has a metric amount shown on the label, but the weight is in ounces and pounds. And I doubt that many people use the metric measures other than foreigner visitors and recent immigrants.

I blame gas stations, if they were to force us to buy gas by the liter instead of gallon, we would all be running out of gas 1/4 of the way to our destination; then eventually we would be forced to convert to metric.

No way dude- my VW holds like 50 liters, I can fill it for about $30.

Yes metric is better.

But, since the whole number conversions on Sterilite and Rubbermaid tubs are in quarts, and canning jars are in quarts, and the drug culture uses ounces, and the mushroom videos I assume use quarts, cups, and pints (never seen them just PF tek), your determination to change is not likely to have much effect.

Actually, you don't know what degrees people here have.  There's some extremely educated people here and more than one doctor.  However, it doesn't take a degree to be a mycologist.  A mycologist is one who practices mycology.

As long as we buy our jars in quart size and have measuring cups in our kitchen cabinets, that's the system we're stuck with in the US.  I have no doubt we'll make the switch someday, but we Americans are so damned afraid of making changes for some silly reason, even when shown something else works better.  Look at all the ruckus the rednecks are stirring up over health care overhaul as a prime example.

The Celsius scale was not created solely for theoretical science. Where did you get that from?  It uses the boiling and freezing points of water as its arbitrary scale and was intended to be used to measure the temperatures of substances.

Even Kelvin isn't entirely theoretical. We measure temperature in Kelvin all the time.

From experience with baking, the metric system is invaluable - particularly for finite measurements, not to mention the ease in converting volume to weight.  Volume alone is just not conducive towards conveying consistent proportions across variable ingredients.

When I was nine years old, we were told in school that we would no longer be using avoirdupois or imperial measurements.    We were, as a nation, switching to metric.    Didn't happen.

Does a system that uses 10ths make more sense?    Of course!

Can I eyeball a centimeter?    Nope.

I've learned the "American" style of weights and measures, and now I feel stuck.
