More Evidence of Dana White's treatment of fighters
    #10827054 -

PHILADELPHIA -- Anderson Silva was shaking his head no before the reporter finished his question. Silva was shaking his index finger, too.

The UFC middleweight champion didn’t need his interpreter to tell him that his knockout win Saturday over Forrest Griffin would only crank up the calls for a dream matchup against Lyoto Machida. So as soon as Silva heard “Machida” -- the name of a friend, occasional training partner and UFC 205-pound titleholder -- at the UFC 101 postfight news conference, he began dismissing the possibility of ever fighting him.

Then UFC President Dana White intervened.

“These two are friends,” White said, quick to remark on the matter before Silva. “It has nothing to do with friendship. It’s about who’s the best. It’s about competing against somebody else, no different than a basketball game or a football game. If Anderson gets to that point where he starts taking out 205-pounders, I’ll make that fight. I promise you, I’ll make that fight.”

White turned to Silva and Ed Soares, the Brazilian’s manager and interpreter.

“Go ahead,” he told them, half-jokingly. “What’d you want to say?”

this is why Fedor will never come to the UFC

Well then fuck Fedor. Fighters should have to fight who they're told to fight. If you refuse to fight someone or if two agree to refuse to fight then they should have their belts taken away and kicked out of the league. Just like the Klitsko bros not fighting. Those boxing organizing should say, fight or lose your belts. That shit is gay as fuck. "He's my friend" or what the fuck ever. If you're a fighter you should fucking have to fight.

I like the way White governs the UFC (although I do admit that you and some other posters around here know more about it than I do as I am an MMA newbie)

on the other hand White stopping fights himself like Silva and Jones or even Fedor and Lesnor is also lame. I think if Fedor and Lesnor want to fight but they don't want to switch leagues or whatever their called UFC and Pride, then they should be able to fight just make it for a big prize instead of the belts and give their organizations a cut of thr proceeds. I don't know, the more I write the more I see I don't really have a solution. I do know that Silva shouldn't be allowed to stay in the UFC if he refuses to fight whoever he's told to.

I can't even begin to describe everything that's wrong with what you're saying, but i will attempt to do so.

First of all, you referring to MMA as a "league" already serves as evidence in the flaw in your arguement.

Fight sports are far different than any other sport, because they are simply impossible to controll by one single organization.

This isn't football where u can fit 100 talented guys into a 3 hour period of viewership.

You're talking about uncountable amounts of untapped talent sprouting all over the world every day.  Which is the same reason why Boxing has never been able to regulate all the world's talent under one singular federation.

Anyone who thinks that all the top fighters are systematically filtered into the UFC, have no frickin clue about the history of organizational interactions that have been going on since before the UFC came into exsistence.

Which is WHY its so incredibly stupid and retarded and ignorant when people say "screw fedor" like he isn't thee most intricate or iconic figure in the sport today.

The flaw of most american MMA fans like yourself, is that you've been spoonfed by the UFC since u've gotten into the sport, that you're pretty much completely inable of grasping the global scope of the sport.

I can garuntee that 99% of American MMA fans have never stayed up to watch a live Sengoku/Dream/SHOOTO/Rotterdam/M-1/K-1/CFC Brasil/Brasil Luta Libre event

Which makes it impossible for u to even appreciate what Fedor means to MMA, and how vital he is on the global scale of expanding the sport.

You sound just like those people who sided with the Detroit Lions front office when Barry Sanders was forced to retire.

First off, I admit that I am still learning about the sport but I did have some interest in Pride before I had even heard of the UFC but whatever I admit I am a novice fan.

By 'leagues' I meant Pride and UFC.

I'm glad I said 'fuck' Fedor then.

So what's your solution to get Fedor and Lesnor to fight, then? Or do you not think they should fight or what?

Lesnar doesn't deserve a shot with Fedor.  I dont care what the UFC says, he's not even close to ready to fight Fedor.

When Dana White says "Fedor needs to come to the UFC if he wants to cement his legacy"  he had been saying the same thing when Tim Sylvia was champion.

And when Andrei Arlovski was champion, Dana White convinced all the noob UFC fans that nobody in Pride was well rounded enough to fight him.

Fedor has completely and utterly raped everything the UFC has had to offer, the two champions who had held the UFC title belt for the past 4 years.

Despite the hype machine that the UFC has created, and the short term memory of most nooby fans,  Brock is just another fighter in line.  HE has nothing to offer Fedor, which he hasn't seen before.  But the UFC doesn't want u to know that.

The truth is that everyone behind closed doors knows the UFC heavyweight belt is a joke.  The UFC heavyweight belt has been a joke ever since Ricco Rodriguez, and then Tim Sylvia were caught using steroids, and Frank Mir was beaten down by Pe De Pano...

In fact, not since Randy Couture beat Pedro Rizzo for the second time, was a UFC heavyweight fighter considered truely "the best in the world".  He was subsequently beaten by Josh Barnett, whod be then caught positive for roids.

People seem to completely forget, or fail to even realize, that the UFC heavyweight belt has NEVER been held by a #1 ranked heavyweight fighter for the past 7 years.

WHich is why they need Fedor more than Fedor needs the UFC.

I don't agree with you on that statement Smoke.. Whether it was called a interim belt or not, Nog was the legitimate UFC heavyweight champion when Randy wanted to take his ball and go home...  And to say Antonio Nogueira was not the top heavyweight in the world from 2001 to 2003 debatable..

Fedor didn't take the title off Nog till 2003... Nog held the Pride HW title from 2001 to 2003.. The statement was the UFC title has not been held by a ranked number one HW in seven years.  And my statement is at least in 2002 of those three years Nog was the number one HW in the world..

Or maybe i am reading this post  wrong..

Smoke

Do you mean at the time of holding the title, or the person's career?  I am taking it as career wise...

Ok then i agree with you and lets be honest The UFC has not had the top HW longer then 7 year.  I count it going on 9 years.

Pride:

2001 to 2003 Nog originated, and  held the Pride HW title outside of the UFC nut huggers at the time most of the world recognized Nog as the 1# HW in the world for two of the years and up till 2003, and Fedor beating him for the title..
Then while Fedor was hurt  Nog was the interim champion...  Fedor came back and closed Pride out and has held the 1# title since.

Pride: Champions Nog and Fedor.

UFC

Randy Couture 2000-2002. He is in my eyes the last 1# HW they had because 2001 Nog and Pride created the HW title.

To many champions to name because people had a bad habit of getting the title and losing it in less then 2 years.  Here is the link if you are wondering..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UFC_champions#Heavyweight_Championship

The only one on that list who i believe ever had a shot at being the number one HW is Mir BEFOREthe accident... The kid was an animal, and i think he would have progressed and you would never have seen Tim Syliva, or Andrei Arlovski as champions. Shit there is a good chance he might have still been holding the title.. Would that have prompted Fedor to come to UFC? Maybe not but it may have peeked his interest and people would have wondered who was the better... We all know Fedor is by far, but this is a what if he hadn;t gotten hurt deal... People may have looked at Mir as being a close second.

I mean yeah that period of 2000-2002 was a little iffy, debatable, etc.

Like you said, most ppl considered Mark Coleman #1 once he took down the GP, just because it was the deepest assembled field of heavyweights brought together.

I definitely think Nogueira was a bonified #1, and he proved himself worthy of that ranking even when Fedor took over.  Nogueira still fought and beat so many great guys to re-earn his title shot.

The last time for SURE the UFC had a #1 HW was El Guapo.  I know that for sure.  He was ranked #1 across the board.

Yea no doubt Bas Rutten was..

The big controversy of 2001 and 2002 was if you were  watching UFC only then you'd cast your vote that Ricco Rodriguez was the 1# heavy weight in the world at the time..  If you watched both shows then you would say Nog was.

But then comes the Tim Syilva- Andrei Arlovski era..  Mir in there for winning the title before he crushed his leg, and was stripped.

I still dont think Lesnar's proven much by beating Couture and Mir.

This wasn't the first time Mir had been ground and pounded to submission, Pe De Pano, Brandon Vera were both able to do this.

And Randy Couture is the best stylistic mathcup possible to cater for Brock Lesnar....a smaller, weaker, older wrestler.

Lesnar has yet to fight a really dangerously slick subission fighter, i'd love to see him in there trying to ground and pound Fabricio Werdum.

And Lesnars also never been cracked before, or even been threatened to get hit by any decently strong puncher.

Dana White isn't mistreating his fighters by trying to arrange fights between training partners, he's doing what everyone else who watches fights but doesn't train themselves wants to see.  He doesn't understand the bond that can happen between training partners because all he sees is assets and cash.

Every single one of my friends that doesn't train MMA but likes watching is convinced Silva will fight Machida for the belt eventually if they keep winning, no matter how many times I tell them they won't.

So is that mistreatment?  No.  Just sound business reasoning, you can't run a company like that by catering to the desires of every athlete in your company.

Lesnar is an illusion. Yes, he's fucking huge, and yes he can wrestle, but in my eyes he hasn't proved enough by beating Couture and Mir. Couture is on his way out and a bad match up IMO, and Mir beat him once so in my eyes it's even. It's his bullshit WWF "I'm playing the villian" stuff that bugs me. UFC doesn't need that drama.

The mistreatment isn't in his policies regarding the fight, dude.

It's how he addresses issues beyond the concerns and opinions of his fighters.  It's his personality.  It's what he's done for so long.

Don't you remember Murilo Bustamante?  Remember what Dana did to him?

Or how about Jens Pulver.

Do you remember his personal grudges with BJ Penn and Tito Ortiz?  And what almost all former UFC fighters had said about Dana white during the UFC dark age?

Or how about more recently even, his forcefull closure of Liddel's career.

In no other sport does the commissioner decide when a player retires.

It's "just another example" like I said.

You should also see how uncomfortable he made BJ Penn during the prefight interviews.  Go watch that.

Like I said, Fedor has stated himself that he's always been an observer of the UFC's poor treatment of fighters.  And it's one of the biggest reason why he wont sign.

I don't really see him doing anything different than anybody else who's put into the situation of having to treat fighters as assets.  He has to de-humanize every fighter essentially to do his job right, hence why him putting Liddell into retirement seems very out of character since he can still milk a huge paycheck out of him.

Do I like it?  No.  Do I think it's the reason the UFC has succeeded where others have failed? Probably.

In a business sense fighters are assets, plain and simple.  Assets don't have desires, don't have concerns, and don't choose their own path.

My larger issue with his treatment of fighters is how he deals with younger, newer fighters who don't make enough to cover their hospital visit.  He shouldn't be trying to cater to each fighters needs but he should be paying them all more and more equally.  (Lesnar has made more in one fight than the payroll of an entire UFN event, and probably some lower-quality UFC PPV's)
