So your saying it is impossible for the human mind (the rational ego?) to understand "God"? The Buddha wouldn't speak of his enlightenment, but I thought that this was because he only would tell people what they needed to know at a certain time to best assist their spiritual evolution. Do you think when one reaches enlightenment they can "know" God, but still can't understand it?

Books makes alright paperweights, and the large quantity would surely impress anyone entering your study.

I think if we knew how to visualize and project God based on our own experiences, then yes, perhaps we could understand a piece of God.

But, without being told what God is or how to view God by someone else, you are left with summizing what God is on your own. Look at all the cultures that were left to determining what God was in this manner.

Most came up with their idea of what God was by what they experienced physically in the world around them.

As far as Buddha not speaking of his enlightenment, I'd have to say he kept it close to his heart and far from his speech in an attempt to keep it whole and sacred to him. Once you vocalize and externalize something, the nature of it changes.

I can relate to this, because everytime I get in a conversation with someone (usually christians) about my path, I encounter disbelief, belittleing of my experince, correction of my views, chastizing of my ways, and am offered the flesh and blood of christ for the thousandth time over. Then I'm left with days or weeks to get my spiritual center back in alignment with my being. I'm getting tired of doing this, and I may one day, simply no longer share anything that I feel/think/experince spiritually with anyone.

I don't know whether or not anyone can reach a point where they can understand or know God, but I do think that with practice and perserverence, that one can reach a state where they know their own true self, and they may or may not be as close as we can come to knowing God or if We can know God.

Re: Dinosaurs and the Bible. [Re: Fraggin]
    #10817095 -

Raptor Jesus' vision is based on movement! I remember that much from Jurassic Park. Anyways. I often find myself in the same situation as Fraggin where my own beliefs are so far from the typical beliefs held by so many of my "peers" that when I stumble upon or happen to find my self in a religious or political debate or conversation, I usually just bite my tongue and let them think whatever it is they think because I find they are on a path so far from my own, to get them to my area of understanding would be to rip away everything they think is real and hold dear and then slowly, step by step, show them why the other path is the one most true. The path is that of the earthling.

We are a creature of this earth who over time had the gift or punishment (you decide) of gaining awareness of both self, situation, and surroundings. All animals have this on some level, but we have gone far and beyond all other earth creatures. This conscience came with a price, that is the obsession with division, due I believe to our own anatomical symmetry and our projection of that on to all (us trying to create nature in our image). Also the knowledge of ones future "Death," an illusion we created as the only deductible way to understand what happens when someone "dies." Thats where heaven and hell came in to help steer people into submission and also comfort those unable to accept the notion you never will know what death is like until you experience it. Not to mention social control. But that is true of everything right? If I describe any experience I have to anyone who hasn't had it or even if they had, my observation and summary of the experience can not be co-experienced by anyone else for I am the only true observer of myself and my actions.  God created us in his image? I say vise versa. We are very self aware and chauvinistic, often basking in the self awarded glory of our own manifestations. Not to say humans aren't impressive, there is 10% of the population out there that is pretty impressive, but we can all agree that the other 90% is mainly excess. Not to say disposable, but not at all as alive as the other 10%. Religion comes in and gives the message that life is not in your hands and that you must ask permissions, ask for forgiveness, and furthermore submit to an imaginary, invisible, judgement projecting "god" that watches your every move, accounting for every mistake you make against his appointed rule book of riddles and myths (the bible.)So without further ado about absolute mind rot bullshit, I must say that any notion past one believing in their self to be occupiers of all the power, wisdom, and talent of their ancestors, and the inherited collection of all animal instinct and survivalistic necessities and techniques, is basically moot by me. There is nothing more painful than debating something that cannot be true or untrue. I mean, that in itself is a waist of your time here. I often wonder, when the corrupt conspiring little rats of men where writing the bible if they would often laugh and dance in states of grandeur at how their little web of lies was about to create so much ado about nothing. They started a joke, that started the whole world arguing and fighting. So to me, religion, the bible, they are to be avoided like the plague, much like television and any source of "NEWS" I.e. propaganda. I think it was said best by our brother Denise Leary: "Think for your self, question authority."

Besides, what all knowing omnipresent god sends his child to earth, then has him killed brutally to have him resurrected three days later? I mean if my human logic can stronger logic than god than we have problems here.

I see this all as just another way to divide and conquer. We forget we are all animals sharing a planet of resources which compels us to feed this obsession to devide. Mexicans, Africans, Asians, Americans, Dogs, Bears, Chickens, trees, plants, dirt, water, all groans and grunts that formed into words that have symbolic reference to something in our immediate environment. To me, everything is a product of language and because of this is nothing more than grunts and groans from a creature trying to understand its place in a world after waking up aware.

What do you think?

Buddha would not comment on God (Brahman) for the same reason that I stated. There is no linear linguistic symbolism that can convey Ultimate Reality. I think that is an important question that you raised - whether one can know God but not understand. If you read a bit on the Qabalistic Tree model, one finds that a major leap for humans is to leave the identification with the Astral Triangle, which means the spheres which include thinking, feeling, sexuality and the unconscious. This is a skeletal description, but it embodies our personality. If we 'rise' to the Ethical Triangle, that means that we have made a radical reversal of perception. No longer are we a body with a soul, we are a soul with a body/personality. Instead of being a human having a spiritual experience, we realize ourselves as spirits having a human experience. It is the first truly metaphysical perception of our identity. In this place, we are witnesses to all drama, including our own inner drama which belongs to the Astral Triangle. The leap is called crossing the Veil of Paroketh - the veil which separates the profane world of perception from the Holy of Holies.

The sphere of Understanding on the Tree belongs to the Supernal Triangle - what people ordinarily call God. It transcends human understanding, and belongs to the Self-Understanding of God (whatever that means). Above God is the Godhead, which transcends any attributes and is thus utterly incomprehensible from any finite perception. Our human capabilities are to come to dwell in the Ethical Triangle (Geburah-Tiphereth-Chesed), in which we are 'informed by' transcendental insight descending from 'on high' in the Supernal Triangle. This is the Jesus mythos, with the intermediary mysterious Da'ath (Knowledge) situated between the Ethical Triangle and the Supernal Triangle. It is the biblical Holy Spirit between Jesus and God. So, Jesus is "a man anointed by God," which is this down-pouring (anointing) of transcendental insight into one who has crossed the Veil of Paroketh. Receiving divine insight usually manifests as a Compassionate heart which acts above the beckonings of our personality in the Ethical Triangle. The seemingly non-esoteric Christian message is to love your neighbor. This only happens, genuinely and without pretending, when one is really there - really identified with Tiphereth - the Heart of Compassion. Can't fake it to be genuinely enlightened. It's not dry and disappointing if one is really open to this 'grace,' this Bodhicitta. The Bible says that Jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes, but plainly to his friends. I am pretty sure that the sort of things we are discussing are the same sort of things Jesus spoke about with his friends (conceptually, but minus the medieval Qabalistic model).

These things belong to the Perennial Philosophy which predates Jesus and Buddha. Egypt had its understanding. Later, Greece had theirs, even Roman philosophy and religion (Mithraism) had theirs. Some vehicles are better than others and have endured through time. The Perennial Philosophy has even broken through into The Shroomery!

That all made a lot of sense. In the book you brought to my attention (which I'm loving btw!), Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism, Lama Anagarika Govinda says that every time needs its own truths to reach understanding. With the information age moving forward I don't think it is too much of a long shot to say our generations truths may just be created on a psychedelic forum .

They also did things around that time, and in that part of the world like build the pyramids, and invent algebra. They developed the scientific method, laid the foundations of chemistry, developed valid theories of agriculture, experimented with optics, and built from the ground up the basic fundamental cornerstones of economics and western civilization as a whole.

Thats the ticket man, its all about DIY! Meaning the more you learn to provide for yourself and yours by manipulating the environment, the more you are alive and thriving right? The comfort matarialistic buy it at the store american dream we live in serves the purpose of removing nature from the picture as being something everyone must be immersed in every day, second by second, learning its ways, its benefits, its killers, its magic, you know, cause nature is the bees knees :foshizzle: . Also it makes you subservient to your own needs via letting yourself get things the "easy" way, i.e. buying veggies from the store rather than growing your own in your back yard, So you have to buy from some company and trust they did things safely with your food, but I guess this is a "to each is own" type thang I'm saying here, but you get what I'm saying. Our ancient ancestors from all of the places and times you sited all had that going for the most part, speaking of the typical civilian of that time. Now, here in the usa, not so much. Legions of people who live on Jack and the Box, and Am/Pm hot dogs. To each is own  I guess, I like my home grown veggies and mushrooms. Direct control of my health and surroundings. Makes me smile.

Got created the earth and everything including man within 7 days, so there is nothing that dictates dinosaurs existed in a period before man did.

Try bringing up carbon dating, and the response is that it's not accurate.

How could man live upon a planet that is roaming with giant beasts such as the brontasaurus and the T-Rex? I cannot fathom this theory.

Actually the Biblical genealogies from Adam would indicate a 13,000 year old universe.  This is because some in the genealogical chain are not direct descendants, but patriarchal heads.  Since the Bible gives a list of descendants from Adam there is no way man evolved from apes over hundreds of thousands of years.  I am not going to debate this, this is what the very Word of God states, take it or leave it.

I thought this forum was not for debate, I think this thread should be moved to another forum.
