Dinosaurs and the Bible.
    #10810627 -

I've come across people in the religious sector that believe that the earth is no more than 6,000 years old and utilize the creation of earth by God within 7 days to determine their argument.

Got created the earth and everything including man within 7 days, so there is nothing that dictates dinosaurs existed in a period before man did.

Try bringing up carbon dating, and the response is that it's not accurate.

How could man live upon a planet that is roaming with giant beasts such as the brontasaurus and the T-Rex? I cannot fathom this theory.

I don't see why God couldn't have created the world with dinosaur bones built in. Just to throw off the non-believers.

In that spirit, you could toss in the pyramids, stonehenge, and the capibarra.

You can't prove it wrong.

Here's a newsflash... when PEOPLE made up the stories and wrote the bible, they didn't know there were dinosaurs, so they left them out.

Hard to imagine how an omnipotent being forgot about a species that ruled the planet for millions of years... oops!

Sorry, I wasn't attempting to.

I suppose there was a judgment in saying it's the "easy out" but really, I'm suggesting that it is also a very valid answer. If you believe the bible quite literally, than tests of a faith are not going to come as a surprise. Any way, shape, or form. And with an all powerful God, there is nothing that becomes impossible.

Yea I remember a Creationist justifying it by saying God put the dinosaur bones in the ground to test our faith.

IMO Darwinism and Creationism are equally ludicrous. It's obvious evolution is the nature of spiritual and physical progress, yet there seems to be some driving force behind evolution - as if it is being guided.

Then why is 99% of everything that ever existed extinct? Wouldn't a omnipotent creator just skip to the final, finished product?

I did not mean to make the allusion to a omnipotent deity of some kind. If you believe it is possible to gain enlightenment, wouldn't that be the "finished product"?

I see it as we are fragmented parts of a greater whole, a cosmic consciousness. We are fooled and trained from birth to believe we are separate, but in fact we are all connected. The human experience is a learning experience, a path to understanding what we are. We are all co-creators, the reflection of "God" trying to understand itself. Could we not create Heaven on Earth if we put aside egotistical impulses?

The 99% of life not extinct served it purpose, a stage in evolution. It's curious that there are huge unaccounted leaps in evolution where many new species arise in a relatively minuscule amount of time.

This idea didn't quite arrive from the idea of a 7 day creation.  Many theologians are also highly intellectual people who create very compelling arguments.  But for the argument to be compelling,  you have to accept their presumptions, such as "The Bible is Truth."

So if the Bible is Truth, then they can trace back the lineages found in Genesis and further throughout the Old Testament, and use many of the ages listed in these chronologies, and determine that the Earth is around 6-8000 years old.  That works only if we accept the Bible is historical truth.

Accepting all this, some theologians also respect science, and reconcile the two with this interesting idea:  The Mature Creation Theory.  This theory states that God did not create the universe as a big bang or any embryonic type state.  He created it 6-8000 years ago AS IS... AS IF billions of years had already passed.  I've read such in depth descriptions that describe God placing star light beams in mid-space, already stretched from stars to Earth so that it even seems that the starlight traveled the many light years it took to reach us.  In this theory, dinosaurs appear to have existed.

It's like starting a movie halfway through a tape.  That is the beginning of the movie, but there is much of the reel we could rewind through and see what the script held.  But the filming only started at the midpoint.

And you must know that in part of the religious lunatic fringe, this position is actually taken! Just as early Christians came up with the idea that all the religions that predated Christianity were created by the devil to make Christianity's Truths appear to be relativistic when it appeared; God created fossils to test people's faith in biblical writ! Even though the sun and moon were created on the 4th day, the earth of course being THE immovable frame of reference in a pre-Ptolemaic, Pre-Copernican solar system, sidereal time is still what the 7 days of creation are about! Moses wrote the entire Torah, including the passage about his own death. NT authors were eye-witnesses to the pregnancy and birth of Jesus in Bethlehem...I mean Nazareth...I mean...???

Look...I am not an arrogant man, but one cannot argue the irrationality of a psychotic's delusion, and mass psychosis, even socially condoned delusions in the name of religion (sanctioned by our Constitution) are included. One does NOT tell a Downs Syndrome person that they're retarded either. It is all a matter of being really Christ-like, which is to say, Compassionate. Judgement is not Christ-like regardless of what scriptures may appear to say. People's jobs here are to be Compassionate, not judgemental. This is the most fundamental way to discern a Christian from the multitudes of wolves-in-sheeps-clothing who are so deluded that they don't even KNOW what they are.

With such a high caliber (no pun intended) of people, such theories don't need proof, just stupidity.

Supposedly, long after Thomas Aquinas completed his compendious, ponderous, Aristotelian opus, The Summa Theologia, he declared: "It is just straw," in other words, worthless. Now I've studied a couple volumes of that work, along with much classic Christian theology. I even bought a multi-volume hardcover set of the Ante Nicean 'Fathers' - those theologians who wrote before the Council of Nicaea which codified Catholic Christianity by the Nicean (Apostle's) Creed. I have been reading and collecting Christian theology: Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, since 1976 when I went to seminary, and I have finally come to the conclusion that other than a simple confession of faith in an Ultimate Reality - an irreducible, eternal substratum - it's ALL bullshit.

There is absolutely NOTHING that a human being can posit about GOD. One cannot say that "God is love," or "Light," or a Trinity, or any of the Islamic 99 Names, or any of the Old Testament personality traits. All one can do is take the Via Negativa - the negative path of Christian, Islamic, Buddhist and particularly, Hindu mystics who simply say "Neti, Neti" - Not this, not that. Any time one says what God is, or what God wants - one is simply wrong. And if one is uncomfortable freefalling in this Buddhist Void, that is too bad. Then one has to be fed with 'milk,' not with 'meat' because one is unsuited for the simple TRUTH of the matter. One will have to cling tenaciously to the Christian myths AS IF those myths are describing historical and physical events which somehow prove that you too will experience a physical historical event, like physical resurrection, or Jesus descending from the 3rd tier of heaven above the dome of the sky. Don't misunderstand me: I aim at shaping my personality to 'be conformed to Christ,' i.e., to BE Compassionate, because Compassion is both Wisdom and the means to Wisdom as far as I'm concerned.

So, I will confess this: God is. Period. The only human correlate is this: BE kind - Here & Now.
Now, what should I do with my accumulated theological library?
