I haven't read through the entire thread, but as the parent of a young teen and an eleven year old, I have to agree with the OP. Actions, more often than not, are motivated by thoughts. Discipline can be achieved through shaping the way your child thinks. My kids are always the most well behaved kids in the room while simultaneously displaying very little inhibition in how they conduct themselves. In other words, they have been trained to behave in a civilized manner out of desire rather than fear. Humans are social animals, do we want a society governed by throngs of those who are fearful of corporal punishment, or a society that maintains order through sovereignty and self control at the individual level?

Perhaps I'm just butthurt or queer or cooler than thou

  No your the fucking idiot !  My dad kicked the shit out of me all the time, I did do something wrong but he would go way overboard way overboard,  As I got older I started to experience rage and hatred probably from growing up around it so who the fuck are you to say some guy trying to teach his kid with out violence is a retard.  He didnt say anything about not disaplining him he said not to hit him.  I use to spank my son and noticed that he would scream at me and started to hit his mom (probably from seeing me hit him) so please dont come here calling people out when you dont even know what the fuck your talking about go beat your wife and have a beer.  Ps only pussies hide behind an Anonymous screen name and then talk shit to some one.  And I bet you dont even have kids by the way you talk Im guessing your about 16 ???

I see a lot of dumb bullshit advice in this thread.

Go through life trying to only "reason" with your child. Once they go to school and figure out how other kids act, they will bring that behavior home.

Then, when you tell them nicely, "please stop" or you try to take their prized possession like an xbox or something away, the kid will get mad and prolly run up and hit you like he's an equal. "Bitch gimme my shit back"

My little brother was not disciplined, but I was overly disciplined as a child. I see him cussing on xbox live, throwing dumbass fits, and he calls people stupid, idiots, all kinds of names.

He is a little punk motherfucker because my parents went soft on him after beating my ass for years.

Guess what? I never insulted people, I never acted rude to people, I knew right from wrong. The way my brother acts at age 11 disappoints me, and as a brother I have tried talking to him.

I don't agree that being irrational and beating your kids is right, but SOME degree of discipline is necessary, unless you don't mind your kid being a spoiled punk faggot.

In the end it all works out though.

If you don't hit your kid and he ends up being a dick, chances are, someone like me will knock the fuck out of him and show him he needs to shut the fuck up.

For the record, I have four children, two of each sex, that get praised EVERYWHERE we go. We've even heard people elevate them above their own children to one extent or another on different occasions, which I think is a bit much, but people are entitled to their opinions. The bottom line is that I have spanked, rarely, but I do. Never before age three as I want them to understand WHY they're getting it, and never with my hands as we believe that hands are made for loving and constructive work.

The first time my oldest was spanked was due to the fact that no matter what we did, she would not stop standing up in her car seat, wiggling free of the harness. At that point we lived in Phoenix and almost all of our driving was 55+, which would certainly mean death for an unharnessed child even in a minor accident. No matter what we did, she would not stop trying to stand up to look. So after warning her several times, I whooped her ass. It SUCKED. I hated it. I still hate it. But she never did it again, not once. She's been spanked twice since and by all accounts is one of the most well adjusted children anyone has ever met.

So to all you "if you spank your children you are wrong" folks, what should I have done?

The FACT is that wisdom is proven correct by it's actions.

Seriously, life or death, you've done EVERYTHING else to appeal to them, talking, time outs, taking stuff away, even raising your voice hoping THAT will scare them and put the fear of God into them enough to stop, and none of it works, what do you do?

Like I tell the kids, I want to appeal to your hearts and your minds, but if that doesn't work (based on the "Mind, Body, Spirit" construction of humans) then I MUST appeal to your ass. Mind and Spirit first, Body as a last resort.

I don't have all the answers, but ya gotta try.

Your kids are going to own your ass when they are older, I am a parent and know all about kids, they are manipulative, they will try to test you constantly to see what they can get away with.

I suggest a good swift swat on the prat now so that later in life they will be angels, but I guess its just a matter of opinion.

In addition to being a matter of opinion, it is also a matter of circumstance. I don't spank my kids but they are generally very well behaved and I've found methods for disciplining them that work. I stop short of condemning other parents who spank their children so long as it wasn't abusive, too frequent, or ineffective.

However when people offer remarks such as "your faggot ass kids are going to walk all over your punk blah blah blah" it sort of pisses me off. Not in the context of reading an internet forum so much, but I would dare someone came off like that face-to-face -- there might be a problem. Kids often cross lines, it's part of growing up, if you continue to cross such lines (such as insulting someone's family) into adulthood you might find yourself facing consequences beyond a mere spanking.

Who are you to say my kids are going to own me, if it were tit-for-tat I could counter by saying your kids are going to dislike you for being so inept at communicating with them as to resort to violence in order to maintain familial order and hierarchy -- I doubt that will be the case, but it is possible.
