CALLING ALL BIOLOGISTS, (or people who are curently studying biology.)
    #10758163 -

Ok just want to get some second opinions on a discussion between me and another shroomery member.

I claim that;

The higher up in the trophic levels you go the less biomass (us) you can maintain.  Therfore humans eating a diet that is plant based would be able to support a larger population, than one that is based off of eating meat.  Am I right in assuming this?

Thank you.

I know I only studied biology in highshool, just wanted to get some other opinions.

yep, that is pretty basic. what is interesting however is the difference between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and whether they are structured from the top down (predator driven) or bottom up (resource limited). lot of cool research analyzing trophic cascades going on right now.

You are definitely correct, the professor went over this last semester in my ecology class.

Yea, some humans eat way more meat then needed (most humans in america).  Meat should be a supplement while plants make up the bulk.

You are completely correct, Sir!

I too am majoring in Biology at a University level, and I remember this section of the lectures clearly...

Here's a simple energy flow chart to show you where energy, from food like plants, goes when it is eaten by an animal (i.e. Humans).

As you can see from the picture, most of the energy from food eaten is lost to cellar respiration. The arrow to pay attention to is the "Blue" Arrow, that says "Growth and Reproduction". That's actual cellular development from energy eaten: all the other arrows are lost in the process, thus will not transfer all the energy from the food they eat.

In other words, the amount of food energy to grow a cow is much higher than the amount of food energy to just eat the grass the cow eats because so much energy is lost from the cow's inefficient digestion.

I guess those damn vegetarian hippies win this one in terms of the efficency of growing plants and feeding the hungry world vs. growing plants, feeding them to animals and eating the animals (very energy inefficient).

But who would want to be a vegetarian when bacon tastes so damn good! I mean, they sprinkle it on salads to make it taste better!

I did biotechnology for 1.5 years, so I know a bit about this.

There is 1 flaw in your logic.

You are assuming that humans can eat the same plants that herbivores can. This is not the case. Thus the biomass that would be unavailable to us fully would become partially available via an intermediatry animal, such as a delicious cow.

Hah thanks for the info.  Yeh I'm one of those vegetarians - mainly doing it for the environment - though a little bit of morality as well.  But yes meat is definitely delicious :drooling:

Yes I'm arguing with a farmer who says livestock can produce more food per area of land than vegetables can.  And doesn't believe a word I say.  Nice to get an opinion of
someone majoring in Biology

Oh, would you say that growing vegetables (ones that can be digested by us) is more efficient per given area of land, in terms of calories, than raising livestock?

You make a good point biotechnology scientist man,

I forget that people don't eat grass, they just smoke it!

But, you would agree it would be more energy efficient to use land to grow crops instead of growing grass and raising tasty, juicy, melt-in-your-mouth cow, right?

I mean, in terms of feeding starving children in Africa, growing edible crops instead of raising animals for slaughter is a no-brainer right?

Both smokes and eats the grass,

Yes, it is more energy efficient to say, grow potatoes and soya beans than to raise cattle.

What about marine life? Are there any aqueous plants that could replace fish?
