Grandad's Old Red Wine Recipe
    #10721512 -

My grandfather passed down this recipe for Sweet Lucy (homemade wine) some years back before he died, so I thought I would share it with you good people.  It is a very simple recipe that I have tweaked just a little to get a little better product.

  Here are the ingredients..

8 cans frozen concentrated red grape juce
1 can frozen concentrated cranberry juice
1 packet wine  yeast... I use Montrachet brand
5 lbs. pure cane sugar
5 or so gallons of good clean water.. I just use filtered tap water

Okay, some other things you need are a plastic 5 gallon carboy ( i use a recycled water bottle), a large pot (at least 2 gallon) to heat the concentrated syrup and sugar, a large stirring spoon, a rubber stopper with an airlock ( just use tin foil and electrical tape..cmon I am cheap), some type of hose to syphon wine, a funnel (I dont use one but I have the technique down) and bottles (I use 9  2 litre pop bottles.. told you I was cheap:)

Take all of the concentrate and add to your big pot, do not add any water to concentrate except for small amount to rinse canisters out with. Add your 5 lbs. sugar.  Place on stovetop, heat on high.  Stir rapidly until all sugar is disolved.  This should take around 5-10 min.  You do not have to boil syrup. I have found that as long as the sugar is disolved, you are good to go.  I let it steep until it looks like tea on the top of the liquid (small frothy bubbles).  Now would be a good time to proof your yeast.  Take syrup and add it to your carboy.  Top off carboy with clean filtered tap water.  Be sure to leave about 4or more inches from top. Make sure you leave enough room to put proofed yeast in.  I usually wait an hour or two then I add the proofed yeast, you could probably do it earlier depending on how warm the liquid is.  I would guess anything under 100 degrees F. would be fine.  Put your airlock on and store in a place that has a fairly steady temp. and stays dark.  I just use my bedroom closet. A garage during the middle of summer may be a little hot.  I wait an entire month and then rack the wine into a 5 gallon bucket.  I also stir in one cup sugar to the racking bucket.  Then I bottle the wine in regular 2 litre pop bottles.  If you want a little better product, wait a week for wine to clarify in bottles, then transfer to another clean 2 litre.  This takes care of any remaining dead yeast at the bottom of the bottle.  Also note that since I add that 1 cup of sugar to the racking bucket, the finished product is slightly carbonated.  This helps with the drinkability factor.  This stuff is very easy to drink..  Usually, all I need is a couple glasses and I am on the portch, in my underwear, howling at the moon...

And there you have it.  Sweet Lucy

                    Hope you enjoy it!!

Yeah, it's not too shabby.  Tell you the truth, it beats a lot of the store bought wines out there.

I've never taken out the old hydrometer to find out.  Wild guess 10% give or take a couple points.  Like I said in my post, a couple of glasses is all that I need, but I am a light drinker.
