I've never been to Europe and I feel like I'm missing out. I don't know much about Europe (I know, I'm an ignorant American). The cities over there look much nicer than anything we have here - even the worst European cities look better than the best of what we have. I'm interested in a laid back vibe to bike around, drink alcohol, maybe smoke some pot. Gourmet food and fine cafes would be a treat. I know the usual suspects (Amsterdam, Copenhagen) are known for this, but a cheaper city would let me stretch my dollars further and stay longer. I also want a city with a high gay quotient.

In looking at them, Berlin looks pretty good. But all the German cities are huge. Stockholm looks interesting. Though I am getting more interested in Prague. It seems small, and architecturally preserved. Restaurants check. Cafes check. Inexpensive check. Gay quotient check to the max - apparently it teems with gorgeous yet humble heterosexual rent boys marketing themselves to every western tourist. Not that I would utilize their services or anything, I'm just saying. And with the proximity to Berlin, I could easily take the train to visit the legendary nightclubs there.

What does the Shroomerite community know about this city? And Czech culture in general? Specifically, if I speak english to people will they understand? Is it a fun place to be? Any other European destinations I should consider? I know you folks have good taste and I doubt your advice will let me down.

estonia has a well-preserved old town in tallinn, all the old structures and whatnot.

They will understand english of course. I'm european but never been to Prague so I can't be of much help, sorry.

Regardless of what you are going over there for,you will have a ball.

You can live as cheap as you want over there but you have to shop around.

Some places sell vodka and a mixer for 99c where others could charge 5 euro.

Pints around 2 to 5 euro. As far as I remember,most people there spoke some English so it wasn't a problem.

Wonderful picturesque city with a medieval castle perched on top of one of the  hills,overlooking most of the city.

Lots of people on the street trying to rope you in places,anything from restaurants,bars,drugs to strip clubs.

We were walking along and a guy said,"Hey boys,you like pussy? Sex? Midget fucking a monkey,come on boys".

A very drunken week.

Berlin kicks ass.
I lived in New York til I moved to Berlin, and to me the art/music scene is much more vibrant here, partly because you don't have to be a trust fund kiddie to enjoy yourself.
Thus, tons of artists come here, are actually able to do some damn art instead of wasting away in a day job, and find a venue to exhibit/perform where they don't lose their life savings.
Also, nightlife hasn't been regulated out of existence, unlike New York with its ridiculous cabaret laws.
And since you asked, there is a big gay scene here too.

dunno about hostels , hostiles or anything else but you used to be
able rent a place pretty cheap and overall the people were really
friendly, especially bar girls
