My experience has shown nearly equal results, cased vs uncased, PROVIDED you exercise correct substrate moisture and humidity levels.  It takes some tweaking, to get it right, but that's part of the fun.

I have found picking fruits are easier with less damage to surrounding pins with casings fruits are less tenaciously attached. Also moisture reserves are no comparison and result with noticeably less shrinkage of the substrate with a properly maintained casing layer. All in all IME they produce a longer worthwhile cropping cycle. Can you tell I'm a pro casing guy! LOL

I second that!  Time and time again, I have found that a casing layer is my "humidity babysitter".  Pinsets are wonderful and fruits are plentiful.  Perfecting your "casing tek" IS ALSO PART OF THE FUN!  After Harvesting a wall to wall monotub, cleaning the fruits is just an added joy to your hardwork.  A labor of love.  You think those who grow Hydro and prune their harvest are saying... "this is a pain in the ass!".  They're probably enjoying the process of adding the "Final touches" to their hard work.  This is a Hobby after all.... RIGHT?

In a best case scenario where you are able to maximize the fruiting potential of a specific substrate to the limit, a cased tray of this substrate will produce less than the uncased just by reason of the potential fruiting energy lost in the process of casing run.

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. Is "fruiting energy" a scientific term? Or is that your concept of how it uses it's resources?

Is it proven that mycelial growth actually depletes "energy" reserves?

Just apply logic, you have a living organism and a limited amount of nutritious material it can use to live off of. Everything this organism does consumes energy, this energy is created by digesting the nutrients. The more it does (colonising casing) the more energy it expends and the faster it uses up its limited resource (nutes).

Now, assuming that it was able to maximise potential nutrient to energy conversion then expending energy in colonising the casing would put it behind the uncased one in energy reserves. Ofcourse this is in some magical theoretical universe where both use the exact identical substrate and mycelium genetics and everything else is perfect.

So in short, basic biology dictates that yes, mycelial growth will deplete energy reserves.

It helps with moisture reserves.

It helps to achieve a more even pinset.

In my opinion it is definitely more aesthetically appealing.

----

It is a bit more work.

It takes a considerable amount of thought and assessment in order to understand exactly what it is, and just how a casing and the mycelium within it reacts to environmental factors.

It doesn't increase overall yield.  If you get 100% BE from some uncased substrate over 4 flushes, maybe you could get it from 3 cased flushes though.

In a best case scenario where you are able to maximize the fruiting potential of a specific substrate to the limit, a cased tray of this substrate will produce less than the uncased just by reason of the potential fruiting energy lost in the process of casing run.

I don't necessarily prefer a casing layer, but definitely enjoy watching a properly maintained one.

IRL it does provide better yields generally. There are so many factors that can affect yields but bottom line it creates better environmental conditions for fruiting developing fruits. BE is one thing considering all things equal but in practice few things are created equal. IME it is well worth the effort but I can only go by my own personal experience. Fruits can take the moisture from the substrate or the casing what I see is a well hydrated substrate fuctions more efficiently and happily.

Hyphae, I agree with 98% or what you say. But I dont believe that casing will necessarily yield more.  I also believe that cold shocking can have some desired effects.

When it comes to a method of achieving desired casing results, I probably agree with closer to 100% of what you say.

I applied the same line of logic as radiantthought and came to the same conclusion.  I just said it to prove a point.  Any wasted fruiting potential would be negligible even in this hypothetical environment.

I agree there is certainly nutrients used during the casing run that could be put to use fruiting. I see the casing as a buffer layer that takes the stress of the substrate for moisture which to me is obvious that it is a huge water reservoir. In my eyes a substrate that dehydrates and hydrates several times during a cropping cycle is stressful to the generative process, keeping it constant I believe is more beneficial. Now we mist whether it's cased or not so if we use a casing there is no need to dunk either. I've just experienced more benefits with a casing than not. I consider it optimizing and I pretty much optimize everything I do whether it's cultivating mushrooms or gardening or tuning the bike or even putting the toilet paper roll on the the holder I want the best bang for the buck with the least amount of effort. Personally I do see more weight harvested per tub with less maintenance. If ya haven't noticed I don't grow for the product I grow for the Zen.
