Casing Moisture Maintenance
    #1053864 - 11/14/02 10:25 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Typically speaking...what is your regular maintenance for casing moisture content. Do you provide a water basin like environment to casings which shrink? I've found that this works but leads to an end in flushing usually just after the second flush. When the water was disposed of, it had an appearance of the yellow waste from mycelium growth. Perhaps I simply need better humidity maintenance merely to prevent any casing shrinkage, "I had shrinkage!" -George-

I noticed she was drifting pretty low on the horizon. Please any responses welcome.

Mist after harvesting a flush.

Yeah, mist. I've also been trying a thin layer of perlite on the bottom of the pan. After the first flush, as casing pulls away from sides, I shoot a few drops of water down to the bottom, which the perlite presumably absorbs and sends back up thru into the substrate. Seems to be working so far.

I never use perlite in a casing. Merely a layer of vermiculite which is fully saturated and then my substrate followed by the additional casing material. I just don't like the idea of really tiny peices of glass near food I'm about to eat.

I use coco coir for casing and mist whenever the coco coir lightens in color. I usually end up spraying twice daily from the time my casings go into the fruiting chamber.

I forgot to mention [Re: TrippingBillies]

I forgot to mention that I scrape off the casing and breakup the mycelium with a spoon and smooth it out so it fills up the casing pan again before recasing.
