Shrinkage :-)

if a casing is shrinking.. does this mean it has a lack of moisture in the casing layers? should the exposed edges be stuffed with dry vermiculite?

It's probably drying out, I'd up the humidity if I were you. Do fill in the sides, tho (use *wet* verm) or you may get pins where they don't belong :)

After about my third flush from one of my casings, it had dried up pretty good, and I started to get mushrooms growing from the bottom edges of the casing. It is probably a fluke but those were some of the biggest mushies that I produced.

Nothing, if you don't mind wasting potential shrooms. I cased in a glass dish one time just to observe what happens to those poor perimeter pins. There was pinning like crazy against the glass and only a few of them managed to push their way to the surface... the rest died and rotted, it was sad.

Could be just the mycelium pulling the casing material together as it grows, has never happened to mine, tho.

that explains it.. I didn't realize that the mycelium would compact so much... though it's growth is rampant.

and hey... if you had all those pins on the sides.. why not remove the casing from the glass and let them fruit fully?
