What are the current concepts around casing and its necessity?
    #10681822 -

I've got a tray maturing and its time to decide whether to case or not. I've noticed that the dogma around growing shrooms keeps changing.  What is the current thinking about casing?  Is it necessary? What are its benefits? What are the risks?

Is it necessary? NO!

What are its benefits? Less chance of your tray drying out. You only need to keep a 80% RH level

What are the risks? None that I know of really. If you do it properly That is. Just follow trusted teks and you will be fine! And use the search

The definition of a casing layer will not change and it will remain unnecessary for Ps. cubensis.

What seems to change is the collective understanding (at any given time) of just what it is (a casing layer), what it is used for, and how to properly create one.

If someone thinks that you can get proper casing results using coir:vermiculite, then their results and assessments of those results will be skewed by the fact that they are using coir in the first place.

That is how things change and are misunderstood, seemingly collectively, through faulty premises which are somehow accepted (at some point along the way).

Recently I've been reading about all of these people who are casing after or at initiation and would love to know where they are all getting this idea (misinformation) from at the same time.?

After getting fed up with the casing prep and added colonization time, I decided to skip this layer in my monotub grows. I can honestly say that a casing layer for monotubs is COMPLETELY unnecessary! My pinset was just as prolific as with a casing layer, if not more so. Add that to the 3-4 days it takes to colonize and the prep work, it just seems like a complete waste of time.

My experience has shown nearly equal results, cased vs uncased, PROVIDED you exercise correct substrate moisture and humidity levels.  It takes some tweaking, to get it right, but that's part of the fun.

wasn't gonna bother but since you guys did, yeah I'm a non-caser when it comes to my monotubs.  Various reasons, but it boils down to me not wanting to bother with the extra step mostly.

I have found picking fruits are easier with less damage to surrounding pins with casings fruits are less tenaciously attached. Also moisture reserves are no comparison and result with noticeably less shrinkage of the substrate with a properly maintained casing layer. All in all IME they produce a longer worthwhile cropping cycle. Can you tell I'm a pro casing guy! LOL

I definitely agree with you on the harvesting factor. I do have a little trouble cleanly picking the fruits but that's only a minor inconvenience.

I'm still on the fence on this subject.

I've done primarily monotubs, and while I'm sure RR is truthful about his results, he also has a LOT more growing experience than the average do it at home grower. That "fine tuning" to the substrate/environment probably has a rough learning curve for the inexperienced grower.

So by that logic, I'm pro casing, due to the benefits it offers to those of us that aren't as exact in providing optimal conditions.

I don't mind the extra step so much as I despise cleaning casing off of a crop

It is the extra time it takes that gets me you add the casing and then your shrooms are covered with dirt,  it pisses me off.  With a non-cased sub I can pinch the end and it is clean.

yup, it's actually 2 extra steps.  casing, then cleaning

It helps with moisture reserves.

It helps to achieve a more even pinset.

In my opinion it is definitely more aesthetically appealing.

----

It is a bit more work.

It takes a considerable amount of thought and assessment in order to understand exactly what it is, and just how a casing and the mycelium within it reacts to environmental factors.

It doesn't increase overall yield.  If you get 100% BE from some uncased substrate over 4 flushes, maybe you could get it from 3 cased flushes though.

In a best case scenario where you are able to maximize the fruiting potential of a specific substrate to the limit, a cased tray of this substrate will produce less than the uncased just by reason of the potential fruiting energy lost in the process of casing run.

I don't necessarily prefer a casing layer, but definitely enjoy watching a properly maintained one.

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. Is "fruiting energy" a scientific term? Or is that your concept of how it uses it's resources?

Is it proven that mycelial growth actually depletes "energy" reserves?
