"You can't take it with you when you die..."
    #10593296 -

I remember when I was a Falun Dafa practitioner, I was at practice one morning and one of the park workers tried to give the group a couple dollars.  One of my cohorts told him that Falun Dafa does not accept donations.  He asked, "Why not?"  After all, it was just a couple dollars in pocket change.  She explained to him that money was meaningless, then threw in this phrase in an attempt to explain it to him at his own level:  "You can't take it with you when you die."  In all honesty, it is not accepted because the belief was that it generates karma when you take money to teach cultivation.  Everything in Dafa was free, unless you wanted to buy a printed copy of the book instead of reading online.

So I guess if you can't take your money with you when you die, you can't take your financial debt with you either right?  What are Chase Manhattan and Citibank gonna do?  Track me down in the afterlife, take my virtue and give me karma in replacement for money?  I seriously doubt it.

According to Dafa, all you can take with you is "gong."  It's a very high density energy that you build up through cultivation practice.  It makes qi look like mud.  I'm no longer a practitioner for personal reasons, but the failed donation attempt is one of the things I'll always remember.

So... what do you think you can take with you when you die?  Your thoughts?  Your favorite hat?  Memories of the first time you saw Michael Jackson on TV?  Every thing?  Nothing?  I just don't know.  And I don't care... but I am curious nonetheless.

Falun Dafa aye? Never heard of them. I'd agree with them though - money is meaningless, and you can't take it with you.

Many people get so engrossed in the material world, they lose site on what is really of value, and values in general. You can take love with you  :peace:

Then how would I talk to YOU on shroomery?
I cut corners where I can. I haven't bought a pair of shoes or clothes in the past two years. I deem my computer, car, and house a necessity to the American way of life. How would I go to school, work, or live without them? You have to cut the corners where you can...

Death will consume your memories, your personality, your possessions, your friends, your family, your loved ones, and everyone and everything that makes you 'you'.

I am not a practitioner of Falun Dafa but I am very skeptical of any mystical system that claims to know the truth about the after life.  I would act pragmatically as if this life were my last.

Yeah, if this life is our last we should definitely rape, dephile, and bomb everything in sight!

If you obtain pleasure from raping, defiling and bombing (and can make sure you don't get caught) then by all means go for it.

Yes, living as if this life were your last means different things to different people.  To some it might even mean committing suicide as soon as possible, because there is actually an OFF switch and no fear of being reincarnated as a mule.

For some it changes from moment to moment.
But rather than a mood stabilizer, I recommend non-action.
You can have the emotional extremes.
Just don't act on any of them.

About 4 years ago I was walking in a forest in California and there was a massive tree that was semi hollow with a big hole a few feet up the trunk. I saw something blue sitting in the hole so I pulled it out. It was a book called Zhuan Falun. Is this the same as Falun Dafa? I read a lot of it and it is really interesting but I've never heard anyone else talk about this mind cultivation. I wonder who put that book there, would you know?

I wonder, what was wrong with old Egyptians and their Pharaohs? In the process of burial ritual?

Surely they thought they can take stuff with them after they die?  A lot of stuff

"You can't take it with you when you die."
is kind of a bullshit reasoning for not accepting donations
if in your hand that $1.50 can do more good than in mine id like you to have it
and by this reason isn't it "bad karma" not to accept this money AND put it to good use?

Yes, "Zhuan Falun" is the main book of teachings for that particular path and tends to be read repeatedly, taking on different meanings as you go up in "levels."  (No one is measuring levels, but you know what I mean.)  I have no idea who would have put it there.  Just some uber-creative little Dafa scamp I guess.  Besides that book, there is a set of qigong exercises that most practitioners do on a daily basis.  So the book teaches the mind, the exercises purify the body, the two together form the basis of the cultivation.  Then you just work on following "Zhen Shan Ren," i.e. "Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance" in your day to day life.  Rather than running off and joining a monastery, you practice living by those standards in the ordinary world and the book explains how that is done.  So that is one way it differs from monastic cultivation.  On the main web site you can find a nearby group and give the exercises a go if you want.  Like I said, they'll teach you for free.  If there are no groups nearby, instruction videos are free on the web site as well.  But obviously it's a lot easier to learn in person where someone can correct your movements.  You don't want to do it the slightest bit off.

Perhaps I misrepresented them.  The bottom line is that they don't need the money.  There are no temples or churches.  There is no official group or sect except whoever bothers to show up to practice each day of their own accord.  There's really nothing to maintain.  Practitioners might make banners or brochures to try to promote the practice, and obviously that takes money.  But they use their own money from their day jobs and do it independently.  I know some people who wanted to donate so bad, they'd send a money order to the Epoch Times (an affiliated newspaper/website) with no return address.  Or if someone just wouldn't stop nagging my local group and desperately wanted to give, they'd tell them where they had their brochures printed and the person would go there and pay for them to print up a set.  They really don't want money.  They just don't care.

Yes, some of the people who work for the Epoch Times get paid and that's based on advertising like any other publication.  And though most of the people there are practitioners, it is also their day job.  They were journalists before they came into the practice and now they write for that particular publication in their spare time.
