Don't help the Iranian dissidents

Their victory will be all the sweeter if they do it themselves, without outside help.

If the US gets involved, and the situation is worse 10 years from now than it is currently, everyone in the Middle East will just blame us for setting up puppets and false governments.

So don't do anything.  Don't write representatives, just go on about your lives.

Hey,

Can you please change your thread title?  Did you even read my thread?  I am not trying to get US involvement (past Obamas verbal lashing the other day), I agree that's bad. But I would like to see UN or EU involvement, they have less 'history' with Iran.

I do think Iran needs to be punished for how they treated the dissidents.  Cutting off or decreasing their gas purchases will surely hurt the government (it's hard to hurt the people any more economically.)

I'm running an effort to have people run proxies (Tor and/or Squid) so the Iranians can ACCESS the internet anonymously without fear of reprisal from the government.

The only reason we know what is going on in Iran in the past two days is because of proxies.  And all the info over the past week was mostly provided via proxies.

People need help and that's what I'm trying to do.  It's not about politics for me.  It's about basic human rights and that face I CAN make a difference.  And I have helped 9 people setup Tor relays! :smile:

Over the past two weeks the Tor network has seen a couple of hundred new nodes (relays) all due to the Iran issue!  Now lets hope they continue running those nodes!

Honestly no, I didn't read your post, but my response wasn't even directly to yours.

Yours was just what reminded me I wanted to make a thread about it.  I keep seeing shit on facebook, groups people are joining, notes they're posting, about raising support for them, writing representatives to encourage US involvement, etc.

I guess the interwebz are good for getting info out, as you said.  All we know, we know because of proxies.

But proxies won't help much if they're going to have a revolution.  For that, they'll need guns, ammo, and the will to kill their oppressors.

The decisive factor, is going to be how much, and whose blood they can spill, not whether they can access the net anonymously.

Hi,

In today's world there are two fronts:  physical and electronic.  Without the electronic images (and proxies) there would be no revolution.  No one would know to revolt or why they are doing it.

"Neda" is the spark which lights the forest fire IMO...

Obama's reaction to the Iran situation has been the only decision of his that I truly respect. The West needs to GTFO of the Middle East.

wont matter, congress already voted on a bill in which only one
person, Ron Paul voted no, and like any other bill regarding
foreign policy, it's just more toilet papers since we wont be
sending troops into another unpopular war

The US government shouldn't be getting involved in this, as they lack credibility on democracy in Iran.  But that doesn't mean that the American people shouldn't show their support.  And the Iranians, I would bet, can tell the difference between a country's people and its government much more easily than Americans can.

If you need the internet to tell you to revolt, or why you need to revolt, maybe you don't deserve freedom.

Revolutions worked fine in the past, without the intertubes.
