Rye

I just went to a farm feed store a few blocks from my house. Got two 50lbs bags of rye for 7.00 each and i saw that they have 45lbs bags cotton seed hulls.For 9.00 each so i got one of those.

I have been using wheat bran and its 1.00 a lb so the cotton seed hulls are going to be wayyyy cheaper to use than that.

Thats the way to do it...

All my grain supplies have gone from $8 for a 50lb bag to $22 a bag.

Cottonseed hulls are not a replacement for bran, you are thinking of cottonseed meal which is a little more expensive than bran.  Hulls are about as nutritious as straw and are used in bulk amounts like straw.

Ahhhh man I wish I could get rye for $7 a bag. The only place I've found it is the health food store in my city which sells it for a whoppin $31.60 a bag.

yea I get ripped off too. Best grain deal I found was 75c per pound on organic wheat. I could get more for less if I wasn't such a wanker about getting organic.

Yes i was excited about him having my rye.ie its past the planting time here.Saw the cotton seed hulls and snapped them up with-out thinking.lol you win some you lose some.No big deal.Its still going to be eaten by one of my cultures.I bet my reishi culture would give me a sweet revenge :smile:

Of course price and availability vary, but the cheapest grain I've tried is whole barley.

At about $6 US a 40lb bag, I'm not complaining.

IT seems also to colonize better.

But I have to give it a 40 min simmer after a soak to get it to field capacity. Otherwise its too dry.

Probably if you consider the simmer, I'm not saving any money, but the fungi like it so much better than wheat and there ain't no rye here..and no, I haven't checked the organic grocer !

Nothing is GMO anymore after a fungus has digested it, nor have I ever heard of fungi passing on organic chemicals like pesticides and herbicides.

I guess that makes me for wanking only for birth control and recreational purposes, and anti-wanker on organic rye.

I've heard opposite from environmental science students, who've claimed that mushrooms along with some legumes and other plants would carry chemicals out of soils from pest/herbicides to other chemical pollutants. Same with heavy metals as well.

Mushrooms cannot break down those petrol based pesticides for the same reason they cannot break down plastic. There is no evolutionary niche that has taught them this function. Besides the only mushroom that can even break down oil is oyster anyway.

Also, with GMOs they have been known to contain unusual nutrients and even alien (never existed on earth before) protein structures. Usually such alien varieties are liquidated as farm feed, though the studying scientists often prefer the fields and their products to be scorched to death. Other GMOs contain unusual compounds that could be sucked into the fruit product or even broken down into another odd chemical that nobody knows is in it and absorbed into the fruit.

I know these are somewhat trivial concerns for some but if you have any doubt try growing your mushrooms on a substrate and with spawn infested with pesticides and send them into a lab for chemical analysis. I think you may be surprised. I've worked in industrial farming and nursery settings and you can trust me, you should be afraid.

This seems a lot of suspicion and innuendo.

"environmental science students ?" Claimed ? The legumes and plants are well known for uptake. Mushrooms are not plants.

A girl I know is just back from a Costa Rican bioremediation junket.  She reports the lab results on the mushrooms grown on oil industry toxic waste, with a whole toxic soup matrix of pollutants showed the ONLY original chemicals from the substrate that ended up in the mushroom were heavy metals.  Absolutely nothing else. All else was either broken down or left in the substrate.

There's no good evolutionary reason for mushrooms to break down petroleum - but they do. They seem to learn. Epigenetics sometimes turns on disused genes for new purposes. Plastics are intractible for lack of having chemical "handles" for enzymes to get a hold of, not because they're made of oil.

I don't like GMOs, and what you say about them is true. It is possible that they have indestructible molecules that are taken up, but no proof is offered.

If true, these are not trivial concerns.  Lots of lab tests have been done by others.  Heavy metals has been all that I have heard of being found, in a great deal of research I have read. I'll be surprised when you offer research or lab results confirming your suspicions.

Industrial farming practices can be disgusting.  No argument there.  But mushrooms are not plants.  Plants take up simple and form complex molecules.  Mushrooms break down complex molecules and rearrange them into completely different forms.

Pardon my polemic, but I am not convinced. Show me evidence.

Hmmm

For one there is an environmental niche for oil digestion. It has, for a great amount of time, in some areas bubbled up from the ground. The soil could not be colonized by other plants or bacteria.
I suppose there may be other fungi that do digest oil (I frankly don't know and have been unable to read further into it) but, I maintain that the reason is because of such biological niches.

That said if these mushrooms can break down pesticides I would find it interesting and may consider duplicating the experiment I told you to try in an effort to compare results. If you could would you consider asking her what kinds of species/strains were used to return these results, I deal with a lot of trash cardboard that has come in contact with pest/herb/fungicides and I would like to know what strains should be entirely safe to grow on it.

If this is true though then I would actually say that the bias (baring the rare alien GMOs) should be reversed against the organic grains, as organic growers may not use safe minerals of phosphorus and nitrogen and must supplement their fields in some areas with fishmeal from the ocean. This fishmeal should be rife with heavy metals. I doubt much would broken down by mushrooms it constitutes a greater threat than pesticides.

Your friend seems to be a more reliable expert than mine so I would like to hear more about it if possible.

You're right about organic.  Sometimes they add dolomite and oyster shell to the soil as an amendment and it can contain considerable amounts of lead. I didn't know about the other two.

Maybe when we're all wealthy mushroom barons, we will be desperately looking for expensive lab tests we haven't tried yet.:crazy2:

Personally, I think stuff like that is worth doing, but metals aside, my intuition says it would be damn near impossible to adulterate a fruit body through uptake.  The experiment I really want to do is to grow mushrooms on LDF, MDF and HDF and test to see if they're toxic.

My bet is the "toxins" break down into some "good fungal eatin".  I guess I could easily enough try and see if the fungus likes MDF, and do the lab tests when I can afford it.

I think breakdown of toxics will be an important niche for fungi if ever our society decides to clean up after itself.  Of course, the fungi have got along without our help a long, long time.\

Sorry Poboy for the hijack. We were talking 'bout rye.  Can you reuse it in your 'still after it's been used as substrate ?  Every poboy has a 'still. Turns cheap rye into expensive....

Hulls are still excellent mush sub and golden oysters particularly like them.  You can get cheap grain at your local grainery, usually in a nearby farming town.  I get rye $12/55lb, wheat $6/50lb, wbs $9/50lb.

MDF/LDF/HDF? I'm not familiar with the terms.

I think the problem buckeye is that if you don't live in the grain belt it can be difficult to get cheap organic spawn. Unless you trade your employer's property for it of course. Never mind hills straw and other byproducts of the grain industry. I suppose I could look into cheaper inorganic spawn when I run out.
