Problems with reishi and rye grain
    #5613112 - 05/10/06 02:46 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I inoculated rye grain, and it's colonizing... but slow, like 3 weeks and still waiting on full colonization.

I inoculated WBS, and it's colonizing fast!

I've read that fungacides can be added to rye grain without it being listed on the bag. Would this account for the slow growth, or would a fungacide pretty much stop all activity? I soaked the grains without rinsing first, and didn't rinse after the drain. I did this on purpose, and perhaps I have my answer, wouldn't mind some feed back though.

No, the fungicides only harm the spores, so live mycelium shouldn't suffer. My reishi cultures colonize a quart of rye in seven days. It's the fastest mycelium I have. Perhaps you just got the moisture content on the wbs more to its liking?

You should always rinse the grains before the soak. There is no need to rinse again after the simmer. Just pour the boiling water/rye through your collander. The steam will evaporate the moisture off the surface of the rye berries, leaving them at the right moisture content for loading your jars.
