Help with Peruvian Torch Seedlings
    #10528733 - 06/18/09 06:16 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,
I`m looking for some advice in regards to growing Peruvian Torch (or at least thats what my friend reckons).

Seeds were bought off MOD EDIT: Source discussion not allowed. and the seller reckons they are from a friend of his in South America. Not too worried about this.

My friends plants a few seeds in cactus soil covered with Glad Wrap about a week ago.
Its pretty cold were he lives - about 16 C max during the day at the moment. Despite this a few seeds have germinated.

What he is wondering if he should leave the seedlings out during the day and place them in an incubator at 24 C at night.
Or will this change of temperature be too much for themÉÉ
Will they be confused if the `day` is colder than the nightÉÉ
My question mark button is broken!

If needs be I can have a light hung above the incubator but I would prefer them to be in natural light.

Thanks for your help

Looks like you may need a little more light, but I wouldn't put them outside with plastic wrap over them.  A simple fluorescent light will do.

I always like to refer people to the 75 watt flouro "grow light" walmart sells for ten dollars. It will take on almost all of your seedlings and can be lowered as low as 3-5in above them as they age, don't use with larger cacti though it's not strong enough to even phase them.

the seedlings look fine for this early stage after germination.
although your friend would get better germination rates if he used the incubator you spoke of and kept them a bit warmer.
20c - 30c is generally a good range for cactus seed germination.
they don't need much light at all at this stage, a window that recieves bright but indirect light would be perfect, or a small flouro lamp as amberica suggested.

Thanks for the quick replies and reassurance. This is his first time so wants to be right.
Some of the seedlings look like the have fluff growing off the bottom of them.
Seedlings will be kept in the incubator at night and in indirect sunlight during the day.

Another question: Can growth be sped up if they are given light for say 18hrs a day instead of 12??

That's their roots.

Some of this fluff is in a single strand and running across the top of the soil.
Almost looks like mycelium.

Did you sterilize the soil? If you didn't chances are it is a fungus ofsome sort.

No I didnt sterilize the soil. It was brand name soil. I figured it was sterile.
Are the seedlings too small to be transplanted??

if its coming from the base of the seedling then it is probably its roots, but it could be some kind of fungus.
they are probably a bit young to be transplanted, but there is no need to transplant them anyway.
just get some fungicide in a sprayer and give it a mist whenever you see anything that could be mould starting to appear

Yea I use soil straight out the bag and its usually pretty good just when you say there is hairy mycelium looking stuff on top of soil its usually a fungus for me but ever since I put a thin layer of sand on top I haven't had any real problems with fungus.
def. don't transplant you shouldn't need to do that for quite a while

I thought the same thing when I first started, its probably just their little root system. If your worried go pick up some schultz garden safe 3 N 1 for 10$ at your local convenient store, its a neem oil spray that will take care of any fungi problems.

When you say mould I assume it is green.

If these things are the roots then they sure are big for the size of the seedlings.
Ill try to get a photo later on.

Thanks for the help.

mould doesn't have to be green, could be any number of different colours.
