Im thinking about buying a 2002 Jetta with 87,000 miles on it.  Its a 4 cyl, automatic, gasoline.

There you go. According to the charts, you should be buying a Toyota.

Pris, what do you drive?

man, to hell with all of you VW bashers...

their diesels are the best option for a passenger car

they are also very suitable for a vegetable oil conversion.

yeah diesel is cheap now, but, vegetable oil is free.

also, consider one day if we have a fuel shortage, rationing, or stoppage....

you could still drive your car, while everyone else would be stranded.

not a bad option.

To the OP:

I've fucked around with many piece of shit American and Japanese cars, but my VW Golf is by far the best I've had.  I paid $1500 for it several years ago with 100K on it and have put almost 75 on it myself and it runs, no shit, better than the day I bought it.

And other than shocks I haven't had to do anything except routine maintenance.  Some belts need replacing too, but I don't know what the fuck the belt attached to the serp belt is, so I'm nervous to do it myself.

But yeah, I will buy another VW for sure when this car finally dies.  Fuck Ford, and GM, and Toyota, all of whom I have had shitty vehicle experiences with.

Fuck, I paid almost 3X as much for a Mercury Sable that lasted me less than a year.

Agreed. VW is the way to go if you want want good performance and good mileadge. I had a 95 VW jetta  3 VR6 5 spd and it was awsome, 28 mpg, and fast as fuck and all the goodies built in. Get one with a VR6 or turbo deisel, otherwise it's a waste of time. The turbo deiselgets 48 MPG, the turbo 1.8 4 cyl gets 31. But the VR^6gets almost as much and has 35 more hp and torque. I'm happy you want to go with VW cause it really is a great car no matter what you pick. Don't let no-body tell you otherwise.

I've owned several fords and rarely had to do any service work
other than a clutch in my pinto, a 71 f-100 with no bushing that
still ran like a champ, my 2000 ford was dogged to hell and back
and I never did shit for maintenance in 7 years, 2 oil changes,
it was totaled by insurance after it rolled down a hill and hit
a tree, the front end was smashed but it ran great and the AC
still worked

3 hondas including the current one that were great, a couple of
GMs that I put better than 150K on, one old toyota and an
infinity that great cars, gave $20 for an audi and after about
$100 in service it was good to go, lasted 2 years and 100k miles

the key is to not start with someone elses headache

I should also say, if you live anywhere where it snows, I have more fun driving my VW in the snow than any other car I've had.

It's a fucking blast.  I live right on the shore of Lake Michigan so it gets fucking crazy in the winter and I've never been unable to get where I needed to get in that car.

Right on... my second car was an '88 VW Golf that I paid $500 for, it also had around 100k on it already.
It ran perfectly.. only thing I had to replace was shocks and brake pads when I got it.
We abused the FUCK out of that car, it was the subject of much thrashing and abuse, and several road trips.. that thing never even blinked.
Ran like a champ for 3 years solid, I probably put about 100k on it. And it still purred like a kitten.
Never did any real maintenance to it, couple oil changes and new tires was about all of it..

It finally died when I let my friend borrow it and he managed to break the rear axle and bust up a ton of shit. Definitely got my money's worth from that car 100 times over though.

maybe some got decent cars... I see shops that specialize in
specific vehicles, VW/Audi, Volvo, Saab... theres a few others,
maybe a few people got good ones and the rest are lemons whos
warranty ran out, they designed the water pump to go around 50k
miles, it cost several people an engine, seems to be a high number
of reported issues, many recurring

I test drove a new and used one (1yr trade/lease) before I bought
the infinity and both had issues with the transmission

I have an 03' jetta turbo at about 100k miles.  Had a few issues, but nothing worth getting my panties in a wad.

Hydraulic trunk lift bad (known issue recalled): Fixed under warranty
Door lock on rear driver side door quit working (Twice): Fixed under warranty
Catalytic clogged: FIxed under warranty
Blinker/Cruise switch crapped out:  I paid for that one
